N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Holly Ochieng Date of Activity: 8/13/2018 and 9/27/2018

Faculty name: Linda Perez

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with:

The first community service activity I attended was in the SILC lab on August 13, where

I helped prepare the lab and lab kits for first through third semester students. I cleaned

mannequins in the lab and put together lab kits for third semester students. I also prepared the

staple removal and suture removal practice squares for the second semester students. The

purpose of this activity was to prepare the SILC lab, lab equipment and materials for incoming

students.

The second service activity I attended was on September 27 at the Salvation Army

Hospitality house. There, I worked with a group of other students to prepare and serve dinner to

the residents. We started first by cleaning the cafeteria and kitchen, then moved into making and

serving dinner. We were also able to provide some education on healthy eating, specifically how

to eat healthy without a refrigerator. We provided a handout that reiterated the information we

went over and talked through it with them. We thought this health education topic would be

fitting for this population because many of the people we were serving were homeless, at least

part-time, and did not have access to refrigerators and other methods of food preservation when

they were outside the shelter.

Where was this held and what was program/activity length?

The first activity was held in the College of Nursing SILC lab and was 4 hours long.

The second activity was held at the Salvation Army Hospitality House and was 4 hours long.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

Both of these experiences were very valuable to me. In the first, I was able to experience

first-hand the effort that goes into preparation for each semester. I think this helped me realize just

how much time it takes and really appreciate the people who took the time to prepare these things

for me. I also think this experienced showed me how far I have come and all of the things I have

learned throughout the last two years.

In the second, I think I learned how important it is to meet people’s immediate physical

needs and how that will open them up to really listen and learn from you. Education is often

difficult in certain populations, but this really showed me how much more people are willing to

learn when they feel they are being cared for. I also felt that this experience was a good reminder

of how important it is to really take the time to show someone you care.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why

or why not? (Describe)

Yes I would recommend both of these experiences in the future. I think it is important

that everyone spend some time serving their community both inside and outside of the

university. I think that students can greatly benefit from taking a few hours out of their day to put

someone else’s needs before theirs. Being in a position where we are so fortunate, it is always

humbling to be able to give back to the community in any way.
