10 Problems Mechanical Engineers face in industry and how
you can use Molykote® to tackle them
1. Oil leaks from gear boxes, etc: Oil seals and ‘O’ rings at the shafts starts
to become brittle and degrade in contact with the media (lubricant, dilute chemicals,
contaminants, etc), resulting in oil leakage. This can give you recurring headaches.
To avoid this nuisance, see the solution #1 on the right.
2. Threaded connections getting seized: Very common occurrence and
you see an army of gas cutters going to cut the bolt and dismantle the component.
Kind of got used to it now. This can happen at high temperatures, high loads due to
fretting, environmental influence, and so on. Next time, tell yourself, you have
better things to do than breaking your head over a nut. Look at solution #2 on the
right.
3. Difficulty in removing completely (again: completely) rusted
bolts and nuts, bearings, couplings, etc: If you have experienced the
above, you would have faced this also. What to do? Look at solution #3 on the
right.
4. Frequent premature failure of bearings due to high
temperatures, heavy contamination, high loads, humidity, or
high speeds: Now it’s kind of acceptable that the bearings will last this long
and not more. So we try and request the store to give us a couple of more bearings.
Bearings failing prematurely need your attention to ensure they don’t fail in the
middle of the night. Preventing premature failures and increasing reliability is key

5. Link pin abrasion in chains causing elongation and thus
making your heart beat skip: Abrasion of link pins in dusty environments
is very common when they are not well lubricated. The function of a lubricant is to
ensure the friction in the link pins is minimized resulting in better life of chains,
prevent stick slip, and keep you smiling. What to use ? Look at solution # 5 on the
right.
6. Shafts getting scuffing, scoring during press-fit and difficult
dismantling thereafter: Very common everyday occurrence. Avoid press-fit
problems and save yourself time when you need to dismantle. Fighting fretting
corrosion which creates this kind of problems in press-fitted components due to
high frequency, low amplitude vibrations resulting in wear particles which oxidize
can easily be avoided with a simple tool. Learn how at solution # 6 on the right.
7. Leakages from metal-to-metal joints: Not getting the right gasket can
be quite a headache many a times. The surface asperities in the flange make sure
what’s in comes out. Slowly. This leakage can easily be avoided with something
which comes in a toothpaste like tube. Reminds you of making it a habit every
time you assemble a metal-to-metal flange. Remember what’s in, is supposed to
stay in that way. Keep it that way. See solution # 7.
8. Pitting and corrosion in open gears: Friction and high loads in open
gears can turn your head as well. Grease doesn’t stay put. And friction at the pitch
line, especially in slew gears break the lubricant film exposing the gear to
corrosion in open environments. Is there a solution ? Look at #8 on the right.
9. Wire rope gives up: If you want it to lift loads for you, it’s got to have
food. Isn’t it. The rule of thumb is for every kg of wire rope weight it’s got to have
20 gms of lubricant. Or 2% of the wire rope weight should be the lubricant. If it’s
hungry inside, it can’t lift heavy loads. Can it ? The strands fight causing friction,
the core is hungry. Feed them with the specialized food prepared for them. See the

10. People are not as reliable as they were earlier: Labour isn’t
working. If they do, they work their way. Puts reliability in question. Chances for
human error increase. You try and move from a preventive to proactive mode, but

1. Here’s the secret. Molykote 111 ‘O’ ring compound and oil
seal lubricant helps protect the plastic and rubber components by
forming a protective barrier between the component and the media
extending oil seal life and preventing leakages.
2. This is what every one does. If you are not aware Molykote
1000 paste and spray, the economical Molykote P 1600, the
marine grade Molykote P 40 and the ultra pure Molykote P 37 are
now industry's standard ways to make sure fasteners can be
dismantled when they should be. A stitch in time, saves nine. A
layer of Molykote gives you more than that.
3. There are many penetrating oils and rust looseners available. But
for that critical problem that you have none of them seem to work.
That’s when you need Dow Corning Penelube and Moly
Penelube. Mos2 and white solid lubricants fortified sprays allow
the toughest of jammed components to open up. And provide
corrosion protection after that.

5. Dusty environment requires semi-dry or completely dry
lubricants like Molykote MKLn chain spray grease, Molykote
D321R Anti-friction coating spray, etc which provide lubrication
with their solid lubricants and prevent link-pin abrasion. If

6. To avoid press-fit problems and fretting corrosion, use of
Molykote G Rapid Plus Spray and GN+ Paste is recommended.
You get a smooth press-fit and you don’t get called when the
component needs to be disassembled. Premium solid performance

7. Metal-to-metal flange joints can be effectively sealed with
Silastic 732 RTV silicone sealant available in 100 grams tube and
300 grams cartridges. They can withstand heat, oils, fuels, and can
cover the asperities giving a tight seal preventing leakages.
8. Open gears require adhesive, tacky lubricant to stay in place.
They require Mos2 to handle high loads and provide lubricating
film all the time. And you get just that when you use Molykote

in the presence of steam, water and moisture.
9. To keep the wire ropes well fed so that they lift the heavy loads
they are supposed to, spray Molykote S1004/S1014 on to the wire
ropes, or brush Molykote 3694 wire rope grease which penetrate to
lubricate the core and wire rope strands avoiding friction and
running out at load points.
