Poverty in South Sudan

Casimes, Sophie. “Bringing Stability: The Top Causes of Poverty in South

Sudan.” The Borgen Project, 19 Mar. 2018, borgenproject.org/causes-of-poverty-in-south-sudan/

This source is a developed reliable source. This source gives background

of South Sudan, going back years talking about the source of poverty, which is

from the Civil War. Poverty for these people is more than just not having enough

money, most of the people are illiterate, they’re unemployed, and they don’t have

the access to clean water like they should. Since the people are illiterate they are

not able to et jobs which leads to the high rate of unemployment. The people of

South Sudan don’t have the ability to get clean water easily, they have to travel

for some time in order to get some. (Borgen Project, 2018)

The source comes from a group called the ‘The Borgen Project’, they are a

nonprofit organization that addresses poverty and tries to help. This source seems

that it could possibly be credible because there are numbers and statistics to back

up the claims that are throughout this article. The purpose of the source is to

inform those who want to know more in-depth information on the poverty of

South Sudan. This source and my other source from the Mercy Corp website seem

to be a little, they both come from nonprofit organizations just trying to get

information out to people who want it. (Borgen Project, 2018)

This source is useful because of my topic being why there is poverty in

South Sudan, this source tells the causes of poverty for the people of South Sudan.
This source doesn’t change my thoughts on my topic it just tells me more in-depth

how bad poverty is for them. (Borgen Project, 2018)

Mercy Corps. (2018, May 20). Quick facts: What you need to know about the

South Sudan crisis. Retrieved from https://www.mercycorps.org/articles/south-sudan/quick-

I think that this source is a developed reliable source. The source contains

information about how and when South Sudan’s problems started as well as the

effects that are still going on for them now. The article is about the hardships that

the people have like, famine, diseases, and fighting. The main points of the article

really cover the fact that there is a lot of hunger going on because they aren’t

getting enough help for their situation to be better. There are also ways that those

people can be helped as mentioned in the article. (Quickfacts,2018)

This source seems to be credible because in the article there are numbers

given to support the claims that they are making. The author or the group that

published this article, Mercy Corps is a global non-governmental organization. So

the source is published by an association. The people that give the information

that is used on the mercycorp website comes from people that live in the country

that is being talked about. That gives more of an authentic piece of information

because it’s always best to get information from people that can relate to what it is

being talked about. (Quickfacts,2018)

This source helps with my research because it tells more of the things that

are happening in South Sudan and what is happening with the people there. It tells
the different sources that have caused the poverty of the people there. It tells how

the problem started and what is going on now for the people of South Sudan.

This is a scholarly source that gives information on many things about

South Sudan. This source covers many things, background information,

education, inequality, and diversity and inclusivity. There is information on the

civil war that was between North and South Sudan. A factor that led to the

poverty that they are now in is over the oil shutdown that they had, which was not

good for them and what put them in the situation that they are in today. The

people do not have food, which now has them in hunger.

This source seems credible because it is coming from a known library that

many people go to for research. This source lists its references which prove that it

is a scholarly source. Most scholarly sources are credible because that shows that

whomever wrote the article did their research and doesn’t have a problem with

readers knowing where their research came from. As well as the other sources this

one gives statistical information. The purpose of this article is to give what seems

to be in-depth knowledge on what is going on in South Sudan and how they are

being affected.

This source is useful because it gives more information that the other

sources didn’t give as well as reassure information that came from the other
sources. The sources having just about the same information shows what is more

true. I will not be using this source for my paper because I just like some of the

other sources better.

Khalid Siddig & Adam Ahmed & Somaia Jaafar & Ali Salih, 2013. "The Prevalence of

Poverty and Inequality in South Sudan: The Case of Renk County," EcoMod2013 5454,

EcoMod.

This scholarly source covers the poverty that the South Sudan people go through.

The source really covers the fact that there being civil wars for years is the reasoning of

the poverty of the people then and now. The households held more people than they were

built to have because there weren’t a lot of possible places for the people to live in. Food

for the people was like the housing situation for them, there wasn’t a lot of food. A lot of

people were in famine because of inadequate amounts of food.

This source is credible because first off I got this source from the Atkins

Library so that gives the idea that it is in fact credible. Then on the website there

is said that the material of this article is provided by respective authors and and

publishers. Also this source has a list of references as well which is showing that

they don’t have a problem with the reader seeing where they got their

information. That makes the reader trust the information that they are giving. As

well as the other sources, this one gives statistical numbers.

This source is useful because it also gives information on how South

Sudan is in poverty as well as the causes of why they are still in poverty. In all of
my sources the same things are covered which leads you to believe that the

information is true.
