PROFESSIONAL SEMESTER THREE: Final Report

Administrator: Chris McIntyre

Intern Teacher: Melissa Gillam

Administrator Comments:

Melissa Gillam joined the Coalhurst Elementary School team in September 2018 where she
completed her four-month internship working in a grade ⅔ multiage classroom. Melissa's
internship was focused on early literacy and involved teaching reading and writing in a
team-teaching capacity with her teacher mentor. Within this team-teaching role she led the
reading, writing, and vocabulary mini-lessons, provided intervention for struggling learners,
and engaged the children in highly interactive cross-curricular literacy lessons. Melissa's other
responsibilities included teaching social studies, spelling, PE, and art.

Melissa used a balanced literacy approach in language arts. Melissa utilized several programs
in her instruction and assessment including the Lucy Calkins' Units of Study program, Words
Their Way, and the Fountas and Pinnell reading assessment. Melissa demonstrated effective
instruction by understanding the learning needs of her children and through the development
of well-planned instruction and assessment plans. She balanced appropriate amounts of
reading, writing, and word work into her programming. Melissa demonstrated the ability to
differentiate her instruction of reading and writing to meet learners at their own place and
pace.

Melissa was a calming influence in the classroom. She responded to students calmly even
when they were heightened, and she spoke in a gentle voice. Melissa demonstrated that she
understood how her actions influenced the atmosphere of a classroom. She also shaped the
learning environment through calming music and decluttering.

In social studies, Melissa integrated literacy into her lessons. The students learned about their
place in the world in a personal and engaging manner while connecting with literature and
writing. The students seemed to really believe they were interacting with others from around
the world!

Melissa is well on her way to being a great teacher. She has built strong relationships with the
children in her care, she possesses a strong foundation in instruction and assessment, and
understands literacy development in children. Well done Melissa!
