Lesson Idea Name: Erosion and Deposition- breaking down and building up
Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 5th
Content Standard Addressed: S5E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to identify surface
features on the Earth caused by constructive and/or destructive processes.
A. Construct an argument supported by scientific evidence to identify surface features (examples could
include deltas, sand dunes, mountains, volcanoes) as being caused by constructive and/or destructive
processes (examples could include deposition, weathering, erosion, and impact of organisms).

Technology Standard Addressed: Innovated Designer:

Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new,
useful or imaginative solutions.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students will be assigned this video to watch on their online profile.
They will be able to watch and pause the video as many times as necessary. To ensure the students
understanding of the video we will come back together as a class and talk about some of the things learned
during the video, and these points will remain on the board. To address multiple means of engagement
I will allow student to choose what they want to make their own movie about, erosion, deposition, or
weathering.

Lesson idea implementation:

When the students enter the classroom they will be instructed to get out their journals and write down the
three vocabulary words: Erosion, Deposition, and Weathering. Students will then be sent to their classroom
online and watch the video I have created listening for what they learn about those three words. Once they
have all watched the video at least twice and thought about those three words we will come back together as
a class and discuss those three words, what they mean, and what they do.

The class will be instructed to create a video about one of the three words. Since they have been introduced
to iMovie and PowerPoint they will have the choice of doing one of those two. They will also get to choose
which vocabulary word they want to further explore on Discovery Ed. Once chosen the students will be sent
off to research, while doing so they will be required to answer questions.
What is it? How does this impact nature? How do animals and plants have an effect on it? What are some
examples of things that it creates?

As students are working I will moving from table to table talking to individual students seeing how they are
coming along, if they need any help setting things up etc. Once all students have created their
iMovie/PowerPoint they will upload them to our classroom page. From there I will create portfolios for
students to be able to go and learn from and review each concept. This will help students clarify any
misunderstandings and also study for a test.

Importance of technology: Using the video in this lesson is a great way for students to visually see the
weathering, erosion, and deposition happening. This better will connect the process to the word, and help
eliminate any mixing of the terms and their actions. Not only will students be watching a short video about
those three process, they will choose one and make a much more in depth video about it, the students will do
further research on their Discovery Education profile. The students will then upload their videos to our online
classroom and I will create a “video study portfolio” for students to refer back to the videos to help them
study for their test.

Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: There should not be any internet safety issues for this lesson. The
students will be watching the iMovie I made on their private class webpage, their research will be completed
on their private and monitored Discover education profile using videos and boards that I have given them.
When uploading their work it will be done to the private class website. If the students do not have their
permission slip signed allowing me to upload their work, I will get specific permission for this assignment.
Reflective Practice: This lesson is a fun and creative way for students to learn about weathering, erosion, and
deposition. I like that since they all go together and one impacts the other, they are indirectly learning about
all three concepts simultaneously. Also by putting the videos on our class page the students can watch others
videos to see if maybe their peer had something they did not. To extend the lesson I could group the students
one from each concept and have them create another video outside physically showing how the three
concepts work together to breakdown and build natural things.
