Jesus establishes the New Covenant

a. Last Supper: Institution of the Eucharist
i. "And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, “I have
earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in
the kingdom of God.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it
among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of
God comes.” And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is
my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten,
saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. But behold, the hand of him who
betrays me is with me on the table. For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by
whom he is betrayed!” And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do
this." Luk 22:14-23 (ESV)
b. Description of what Jesus accomplished
ii. “St. Augustine pointed out that the New Covenant is concealed in the Old, while the Old is revealed in the New.
We’ve seen glimpses of God’s ultimate plan through his covenants with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and
David. Now we’ll consider various ways in which these are explained and fulfilled by the New. As the Messiah,
Jesus Christ is priest, prophet and king. He is the new Adam. He is the seed of Abraham. He is the new Moses.
He is the Son of David. He is the Son of God. He is the Lamb of God. Jesus had to be all these things and more
in order to fulfill all of the promises made by his Father. And he did.”
c. Jesus calls his followers to live a life of love
iii. Be a servant of one another: Being men and women for others
1. Joh 13:6-9 (CEV) But when he came to Simon Peter, that disciple asked, "Lord, are you going to
wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered, "You don't really know what I am doing, but later you will
understand." 8 "You will never wash my feet!" Peter replied. "If I don't wash you," Jesus told him,
"you don't really belong to me." 9 Peter said, "Lord, don't wash just my feet. Wash my hands and
my head."
2. Joh 13:12-15 (CEV) After Jesus had washed his disciples' feet and had put his outer garment back
on, he sat down again. Then he said: Do you understand what I have done? 13 You call me your
teacher and Lord, and you should, because that is who I am. 14 And if your Lord and teacher has
washed your feet, you should do the same for each other. 15 I have set the example, and you should
do for each other exactly what I have done for you.
a. The lowest position among slaves means you can be ask to do anything for the sake of
your master ( there is no task that is to “low” for you).
3. Php 2:3-11 (ESV) Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more
significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the
interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who,
though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but
emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being
found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on
a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every
name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the
earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

4. These passages speak of the truth that living a life directed to the needs of others is primary approach
to life Jesus has recommended.
iv. The Love that is described by Jesus involves giving our all—total self-giving
1. Joh 15:9-14 (ESV) As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you
keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments
and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that
your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my
