Reflections

1. I’d say the interest inventory as well as The Curious Researcher pages were very helpful,
as they taught me how to find a good topic through ways I’d never thought before. In
chapter 1, the part about looking at a topic at a new angle compared to photography really
helped me understand how to not be cliché with what I chose. It would have been nice to
do some of the other activities he talked about in class as well, but we did have the
hurricane and Campbell’s dad dying (I’m sorry for your loss). It’s not that big a deal, I
would just want to practically see how it would help. The interest inventory was a good
way to put all my thoughts out there, however, choosing exactly one topic from it was
kind of hard (as there were as plethora listed). The weirdest part about it, though, was that
my final topic only ended up being broadly connected to the topic I circled and expanded
on. I was originally thinking about researching dreams, but then with the extensive
research this assignment had me do led me in another direction, one that I think matters
more to others. In general, it is challenging for me to narrow a topic or even choose just
one. Because of this, surfing the databases and websites in the beginning had me even
more lost as to what I want to do. Still, once I did choose to focus on sleeping, my
thinking about what I was drawn to on the site helped me find my angle.

The reading part of the assignment where we were to read an article and search google
based on it was relatively easy. This is something I kind of do automatically in less detail,
but organizing going into such detail as well as recording my findings helped me to not
only better understand what the article was talking about, but stop and actually think
about its importance instead of just skimming through as usual. This helped me find the
angle I would take on my topic well. In future projects that include initial research, I
think I will try this tactic from the beginning to try and keep me organized and digging
deep in one subject rather than looking at the surface of multiple subjects. I would also
love to use an interest inventory (or perhaps a themed version of one) in any future
assignment where I get to choose my topic of interest. All around, this topic was way
more helpful than not.

2. Even though I researched a topic that ended up being completely different from what I
chose at the library, I did find the session to be a little helpful. I mean, I knew how to use
the library’s website, filters, etc., but I did not know how extensive the databases were,
about the CQ Researcher, or the tips and tricks he gave us on how to get the most out of
your research. For example, I never really thought about how writing out synonyms for
my search terms before searching them could really help me find a result that satisfies
me. I will definitely use the questions he gave us on the sheet to help me research in the
future, as they helped center me before researching. The questions will help me better
know what to do if I hit a dead end, can’t connect what I found to my topic, and/or just
get stuck. Additionally, I will not feel bad about checking out a book for just one section
or feel a little scared about asking a librarian for help. In other words, actually having a
librarian from the UNCC library talk to us will make me feel more confident when I need
to go to the library, for this class or otherwise. This session overall made me more able to
take advantage of my resources.

3. The topic proposal was difficult until I started writing it. It was challenging to figure out
a focus for my project with all the different things that intrigued me and all the research
that I have done. I didn’t even make a final decision as to which of my final two topics I
wanted to pursue until the Monday or Tuesday before it was due. When I did figure out
the broader topic, I read so many things on so many areas of the topic that I didn’t know
what angle to pick. Even though I was skimming the articles I found, I still felt
overwhelmed. This told me that I am the type of reader that finds importance in nearly
everything I see. This is good in some cases, but this wasn’t really one of them. I was
kind of panicking, I didn’t know what to write and the clock was ticking. These issues
were only amplified by the lack of classes and therefore instruction we had as well as the
fact that I had other classes to do work for. I got little time to do the amount of research I
would think it would take me to find my ‘aha,’ topic, and didn’t get to writing my
proposal until the day of during class (which, having work time during class really
helped).

When Campbell told us to make a schedule to finish the topic proposal, I think I was
generous yet reasonable with the time I allotted. It was a perfect opportunity for me to
make progress towards one of my goals for the semester, which was to be able to make a
schedule for doing an assignment and stick to it. While I didn’t ‘procrastinate’ on the
schedule, I did not really follow it. I jumped right into my assignment instead of coming
up with a general outline like I said I would. I don’t know if the result was good or not,
but I know I didn’t meet my goal. I think I made an overcorrection. For my next
assignment, I should try and get it closer to the center.

When I actually started writing my topic proposal, it became easier to organize my

thoughts. Writing should help everyone think, but this assignment really helped me see
that in myself. Though, on the bad side, I definitely did not do a shitty first draft, which
was one of my goals and could have definitely helped me feel better about the assignment
based on what ended up happening. I think this was because I didn’t start the proposal
itself until the day of, so I felt I didn’t have time even though I did. Doing the draft then
would be like just jumping in the pool for me. So, to successfully do these drafts in every
situation, I should start by doing them in the easiest situations to, i.e, at least a couple of
days before for a short assignment is due. I should have made a schedule way sooner that
included a shitty first draft. Next time I will.

As a questioner, I discovered I have a LOT of questions about the world. I started the
interest inventory the day before the inventory was set to be done in class, and extended it
so I could get as much as possible on there (the book actually said it would be better if
one did it over multiple days). I liked doing the interest inventory. I would just be sitting
in my car or having a conversation with someone when all of a sudden, I’d think of
something to put on the inventory. Now, I didn’t always get these things down, but I did
always think of something. Even today, the day after the proposal was due, I have more
questions. The practice showed me I was a pretty curious person (which is why it was
hard for me to narrow my topic).

Overall, I think I just need to be more organized with my entire schedule, not just my
writing schedule. Organizing all my classes will give me less excuses for procrastinating
on these types of assignments as well as give me relatively stress-free time early on to do
the work so I don’t feel rushed in the end.

Also, I could work on being more concise.
