Activity Title: Kennewick Man: Science and Sacred rights

Utah Core Standard:

English Language Arts
Grade 11-12
Writing Standard 1

Objective (s):
 To learn about the discovery of Kennewick Man and what this ancient skeleton
suggests about the earliest inhabitants of North America.
 To examine the controversy surrounding Native American efforts to rebury
Kennewick man in accordance with their traditions and federal law.
 To explore the relationship between science and religion as reflected in their
shared concern about human origins.
 To gain experience in the close analysis of argument.

Learning Outcomes:
 Student will participate in discussions which promote critical thinking and
challenge their previous knowledge.
 Student will learn to critically analyze content and to consider the source.
 Student will be exposed to grammatical trends including phrasing, spelling, and
punctuation.
 Student will have to consider ethical and moral subjects and discuss them.

Instructional Procedures:
 Read articles individually or as a class, depending on the ability of the students to
behave and work together.
 I will pose questions to students to write while they read through the
predetermined articles. They will use these to participate in discussion. They will
also make a list of vocabulary words, which will be words they don’t recognize or
aren’t clear on the definition of (at least 5).
 Discuss articles, questions, and implications as a class. In groups, students will
choose someone to represent them.
 At the end, we will talk about the conclusion of the conflict and discuss our
perspectives.
 This presentation is a simplified version of this lesson plan; it would have
otherwise had to be covered over two periods.

Materials:
 Online articles (in a stapled packet to be handed out in class. This isn’t outside of
the realm of impossibility considering some schools are already using laptops and
canvas for class assignments. However, in my presentation, a maximum of three
articles will be read electronically and then discussed).
 Notebooks/classroom journals.
 Pencils.
 Voices.

Family Connections:
 Students will be encouraged to discuss this subject at home as a family; they may
gain insight or ideas for classroom discussion from their parents, siblings, or any
other family resource. They will include family opinions in their final
assignments as examples of alternate perspectives.

Assessment Plan:
 Discussions will be graded on participation, but they will also write short but
descriptive papers of their views on the subject. My student in the video will only
participate in the discussion piece.
