Hannah Gadsby: Nanette (2018)

Nanette is a standup comedy act that was written and performed by Hannah

Gadsby, an Australian comedian.

Nanette is mainly an act based on Hannah Gadsby’s life and talks about

homosexuality and reflects on the #metoo era by confronting it as a standup.

Nanette “blew many people away”, and, was considered “extraordinary” too.

The act was written to mainly address to the people she shares a world with,

however, since her show gained major popularity and was considered to be “life

changing” it was telecasted on Netlix for the masses to watch and draw an

essence of her life and get a view on major topics such as homophobia and

homosexuality and the #metooera.

Hannah Gadsby has a humorous tone in her act with subtle hints of anger. She

uses sarcasm very often to express herself.

Her act is very well structured and she used metaphors and subtle sarcasm to

prove her points and make people laugh. Her tone and organization was such

that she took a serious issue and shaped it in a way that the audience was forced

to draw their attention to it.

Many audiences felt it was life changing and that this brought a light to a global

issue.

There are strong emotions expressed in her act as the issue she is talking about

means a lot to her and to her audience and is a global issue and a very huge

social movement.

She made made the act about her story “I don’t want to unite you with laughter

or anger. I just need my story heard.” This expresses her strong emotions.

She took the topic of “being different” and expressed it in a very unique way on

a huge platform and wide audience by putting her life story out there.

According to her, “it is dangerous to be different”. Still she accepted herself and

shared her emotions and story.

In conclusion, this piece of work was very well written and expressed and on a

light note she addressed many personal issues such as getting beaten, her

childhood, her approach towards man and made the audience realise that we

live in a bubble and outside the bubble there is a huge life, people with “real

problems”, teens struggling sexuality crisis, discrimination and sexualism.
