3. WORKPLACE STRESS – CAUSES OF WORK PLACE STRESS IN POLICE

DEPARTMENT: A PROPOSAL FOR STRESS FREE WORKPLACE
The article mentions that the job of a policeman is a stressful one. According to National Police
Suicide Foundation, every 22 hours, a police officer in America commit suicide. This leads to a
conclusion that police officers are not able to cope well with job-related stress. Policemen in India
don’t have weekend holidays or even occasional holidays. Instead they have to work even harder
on such days. Due to this, they don’t get the time to spend with their families which usually leads
to frustration. The article says that this frustration can give birth to stress or even depression in
worse cases. Thus, they may start to lose interest in their jobs. Out of 100 police men 80 of them
will be having procrastinating attitude, impatience, and irritability etc. which are the symptoms of
stress.
Recently, the suicide attempts are also on the rise in police department. This is caused by role
overload, role conflict, role ambiguity, poor peer relations, low status etc. This article aims to grow
more fitting procedures to adapt to work environment push and that these could be joined into an
all the more completely coordinated arrangement of human asset approaches for better execution
of police office in the investigation locale. The study explores the occupational stress in detail. It
demonstrates that night shifts in particular have a high tendency of adverse reaction towards the
health of the employee. Likewise, approximately 20 percent of night shift workers have
experienced psycho-physiological dysfunctions, including heart diseases. A survey was circulated
to 60 respondents in Bagalkot area of Karnataka State, before the genuine examination initiated.
The recently made region, with a populace of around 18,90,826 (Censes 2011), was the
investigation region. The study was conducted in 4 districts of Karnataka i.e., Bagalkot, Bijapur,
Belgaum, and Dharwad. The total strength of HC and PC in four districts is 4013. Hence, the
sample size is 475. 11 dimensions were laid on the basis of which the tests were conducted. The
results indicate that the stress in police department among HC/PC is more mainly because of role
overload, unprofitability, under participation, powerlessness, unreasonable group & political
pressure, strenuous working conditions, & intrinsic impoverishment. Out of the 11 dimensions, 7
dimensions are causing high stress in police department. Those are role overload, unprofitability,
under participation, powerlessness, unreasonable group & political pressure, strenuous working
conditions, and intrinsic impoverishment.
