Individual Reflection

1. How do you feel about the physical & social environment of the institution?
Physically and socially, the institution was welcoming even if I was a boy
that was entering a female dormitory. The place feels like one which promotes
harmony and fellowship despite the hectic college life of its dormers. Learning
about the roots of the institution was the interesting part. It is humbling to know
that these don’t just come out of nowhere and instead begin from situations that
made a great impact in their communities.

2. What about the life stories shared by the staff/residents struck you the most? In what
way did it affect you?
The stories of the staff and the residents somehow taught me that life in
these kinds of institutions are far different from those of non-religious dormitories
around the university. Dormitories like the Holy Family Residence do not only
provide students with a place to sleep and study but also help them grow
holistically through simple get together activities with other dormers, outreach
programs, and routines that keep them in touch with their spiritual life. Moreover,
they promote the students to bring out the best in themselves through their
scholarship offers.

3. What could our government and other concerned agencies do to deal with the said
issue/s?
The institution began with helping young women who were uneducated
and homeless in Spain. Locally, our government has agencies like the Department
of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) that aims to help the youth who are
homeless and misled in life; while they can still improve especially in the city where
many children are uneducated and unhealthy, it is true that we can’t rely on the
government for everything. We as citizens of the same country and as people of
one church should take initiative in helping our less fortunate brothers and sisters.
4. How can you strengthen your faith in humanity?
Being in the city, I can see the wider range of human activities, especially
the immoral and unkind ones; honestly, witnessing these make me somehow
reluctant in interacting with those outside of the university campus. To restore faith
in others, I think I must ensure that I have faith in myself. If I have the capacity to
love and to do good towards others, then I would know that others can too because
we are all created equal. I think everybody is inherently good and all I need to do is
to hear their life stories and I would come to understand the situation they are in.
