ROB BLUHM, PT

• My mentor is Rob Bluhm

• He works at Hope Rehab in Dickinson
• He went to University of Texas Medical Branch in Texas
• He specialized in vestibular and balance dysfunction
WHAT IS ISM?

• ISM is a CTE course that you have to send in an application for.

There are many requirements for this course. It is a colligate level
course, and you are required to post a journal every week and get a
minimum of 3 hours with your mentor every week.
PROJECT TOPIC

My project topic is about How to Rehab Age

Related Injuries

I decided to choose this topic because the first day

I was in the clinic I noticed how many people of
different ages were in the clinic, so I started
collecting data to correlate that to the injuries they
had to how old they were.
KEY POINTS

• Prevention of Age-Related Injuries

• Most common injuries related to age
• Most risky surgeries for age
• Hardest injury to rehab
• Most common amount of time for rehab
RESEARCH (KNEE REPLACEMENTS)

• Usually knee replacements include an eight-inch incision over the entire knee
• Success rates of knee replacements are over 90%
• Knee replacements have been going on for over 3 decades
• Typically knee replacement has the surgeon go through the quadricep muscle above the knee and the knee cap is
completely removed
• Why the rehab takes to long is because muscle has been cut into and the strength takes a while to gain back
• Total knee replacement can help arthritis in the knee when other methods don’t work
• Usually people get joint injections or activity modification pills to help with arthritis
• Although the symptoms are similar, it is very important for an orthopedic specialist to make the correct decision on if
it’s a meniscus tear or arthritis
RESEARCH (PHYSICAL THERAPY SCHOOLS)
• By the 1950’s, 31 accredited physical therapy schools were built that offered either a bachelor’s or post-
bachelor’s certificate.
• Some of the undergrad programs that physical therapists have to take is biology, chemistry, pre-cal,
calculus, and statistics.
• Some more hands on coursework is kinesiology, pathology, disease prevention and health promotion,
and public policy and physical therapy
• The highest 10% of physical therapist can earn a high of $122,130
• Typical jobs of a physical therapist include developing a treatment plan, consulting with a patient,
providing stimulation or massage, use equipment and devices to assist patient, maintain patient
records, keep track of records and progress.
• Physical therapist not only need to get a degree, but they also need to get to get a license from a the
state
RESEARCH (COMMON KNEE SURGERY)
• While there are many types of knee surgeries, there are 9 different types of common knee
surgeries. Meniscectomy, meniscus repair, meniscus transplant, plica removal, lateral
release, microfracture, ACL reconstruction, tendon repair, and knee replacements.
• Meniscectomy is used to repair a meniscus. the orthopedist will remove a part of the meniscus using a
arthroscopic technique
• Depending on how much of the meniscus is torn, the doctor may choose to do a complete repair of the
meniscus via a meniscectomy. A repair is different than just removing part of the meniscus. The
orthopedic will insert small stitches rather than just taking out the ripped piece.
• The recovery for a meniscus repair is longer than just a regular meniscectomy since stitches are placed
into the cartilage and it has to repair around them rather than just repair the slight cut of the
meniscectomy.
CURRENT EVENT

• “Does your body really start falling apart in your 30’s?”

• The author is this article, Belinda Smith, talks about her downfall in her body’s pain, vacuuming. Not
only does she just talk about her own downfall, she talks about how her friend hurt her neck whilst
blow drying her hair, and a male friend of hers injured his back when he coughed as he was reaching up
for a book. All her friends, and her included, are only in their mid-thirties when their bodies started to
decline in strength
• Doctor James Fell of University of Tasmanina states, “When you sit at a desk for hours on end, for
instance, your hip flexor muscles, which connect your spine, pelvis and upper legs, remain constantly
shortened."
• Smith also states in her article that Processor Reaborn has discovered that the first muscle strength and
power decline is around the age of 30-35 to 60 years. A lot of the decline of our muscles also have to do
with the fast-twitch fibers in our muscles. Across the board, there are a lot of different ways that age
and our actions can affect our injuries.
PRODUCT

• My product is going to be a video on how to do rehab of a

knee.

CONCLUSION

Being able to have this experience was once in a lifetime. It was truly amazing being able to see what it’s
like in the real world and to see if I would really like to go into this career. I love being able to be on the
other side of the clinic and meet all the patients and new therapists that work there. Hearing all the stories
and meeting the colleges students that mentor there is such a cool experience, and I learn so much more
from them. I got to learn what being in real situations were like, and how to deal with patients that are
experiencing pain or anything else. It was amazing and I am very thankful.
