Studio 6 Revision

My reflection of Bruce Ballenger’s Chapter on Revision

Bruce Ballenger’s wisdom on writing and the revision process was helpful, especially

when I am working on the revision process now. The most important thing I took away from the

article was the fact that he revises his work to look for errors that aren’t grammatical. He looks

for gaps in which he missed information or areas where maybe he has too much information.

When I would revise my work in high school I focused on grammatical errors and how I could

improve my sentence structure and other grammatical mishaps. I think the most boring or

unhelpful part of the chapter was when Ballenger talked about the use of other readers as

revisers. He noted that having a second pair of eyes reading the paper can contribute to finding

mistake that the writer didn’t catch. This is all information I had already known, usually when I

write a paper I try to find someone else to re-read it to catch other mistake that I didn’t catch. I

think the biggest strategy that I took away from Ballenger’s wisdom is the use of revising for

non-grammatical errors. Previously, I was strictly focused on finding grammatical errors that I

wouldn’t look for ways I could improve the information in my paper which is probably more

important than the grammatical errors. Ballenger helped me realize that it is important to find

ways you can better your information. Look for areas where you could add information and look

for areas where you could delete information. Also, I learned about the process of re-researching
which is something I never used, and I had never really been introduced to it. Re-researching will

help me implement important information into my second draft.
