Steering gear difference (Generation I and II)

As of start of production of Rabbit 2004 , steering gear

(Generation I) is installed. This was replaced in model year
2004 with steering gear (Generation II). Vehicles equipped
with steering gear (Generation I) cannot be converted to
(Generation II).

You can identify the steering gear when it is installed by

the number of bolts on steering pinion bracket cover.

- Raise vehicle.

- Turn steering wheel to stop on both sides in succession

while noting the number of bolts - 1 - .

Steering gear (Generation I) has 4 bracket cover bolts,

(Generation II) has 2 bolts.
