Abstract
This study inquires about the issue that we face with corporal punishment that’s being done
to children by their parents/guardians. The grasp a better understanding of the problem
students gave out survey at Tuskegee University’s campus. The purpose was to see how the
student body felt about the act of spanking. In this paper the findings are illustrated through
tables and graphs, in order to have a clearer recognition of the problem.

Introduction
1. Description of the problem
The Problem that is going to be presented is the issue of parents spanking children. As
we all know there are numerous ways to discipline children, and one of them is the
infliction of pain. In this nation children openly disciplined; discipline that sometimes
leads them to being victims. There are thousands in this nation that fall as victims of
abuse, emotionally, mentally, verbally, and physically. A lot of people hold the view
that the only and best way to bring discipline to children is through spanking or other
forms of corporal punishment. Although many agree with this approach, and it could
be argued the pros and the cons of the methods, there are people of disagree with this
specific kind of mind set. This report serves a closer look as the certain variables that
may influence particular views towards spanking.
2. Attributes to be measured
The attributes that I measured were in the Tuskegee University students, looking into
their behaviors. The majority of the university’s student body is composed of Black
students. Taken into consideration was the way in which they would handle children,
if they had they or planned on having them. Measurement of age, gender, and
classification, were analyzed. They were seen as the independent variables, and were
what lead the whole research and the survey’s responses. The attitudes that the
respondents had toward spanking were seen as the dependent variable to conclude on
what were their knowledge and views. The questions that were raised regards
information that may or may not be personal to the respondent.

3. Expectations
I expect to see a lot of my fellow pupils being in agreement with the act of spanking
children. I also anticipate that most of them have been spanked when they were young
and that would explain the way they feel towards the view. I also feel that the younger
age group of respondent will have more responses, due to the majority of the
population on campus. I expect to see few people opposing the idea. The outcomes
will show how spanking is customary amongst the Black community, portraying how
the act is not seen as a hash performance. Amongst the respondents there will be a
difference in their classification and gender which might show various level of
interest. Most of the students will respond base on their present views, not takin in
consideration if the mind set will change in the future when they raise their children.
4. Rationale
When looking into the question that ask if it’s ok to spank children, by incorporating
this question it’s easily understood that a closer observations should be done to the
responses. Since most of the respondents are Black, I think that will mostly agree
because it is common amongst the Black community to spank their children hence
they were surely spanked by their parent. Most respondents, due to their upbringing,
will see these acts as the right way of raising their children. The way that the
questions were tabulated showed that the majority of the respondents were honest and
solemn about the answers they gave.

Although the data analyzed was a small number of 100, developing a hypothesis was
not a complicated task. Having background knowledge of the demographics of the area in
which the survey is going to be conducted really helps you make predictions of what the
outcome will be. These Univariate graph focus the sex, age, and gender of all the
respondents. They showed the percentage of all of the students who were participants. The
graph that showed gender of the respondents was pretty simple, 54% were females and 46%
were males; which was not a issues because most of the discipline in a child’s life is
implemented by their mother. The age group of the respondents was divided in 5 different
categories: under 21, 21-24, 25-40, 41-54, and 55 and older. In the expectations I predicted
that most of the respondents would be have younger age and those assumptions were made
true in the graphs above. Most of the respondents in the younger group belonged to the
category between under 21 and 21-24; they both had an equal percentage of 44% each. When
looking into classification the respondents we seen having 9% were freshman, 19% were
sophomore, 24% juniors, 29% seniors, 14% graduate students, and 5% vet students.

Discussion:
Graph $ is a chart that displays the percentages of the respondents that think its ok to spank
children as a means of discipline. The findings confirmed my predictions, most of the
respondents answered yes on their response. The results were nowhere near equilibrium,
78% of the respondents chose yes and 22% selected no. These findings show that most
people are in agreement with the act of spanking, which means that most people will
continue spank their children, and most likely that kinds that are being spank will spank their
kids.

Discussion:
The information found in the graph above shows that a large number of the respondents were
spanked when they were young. There is a big difference in the percentages of this graph,
because 83% of the graph illustrates that the respondent’s answer was yes, and the remaining
12% of the graph shows that the respondent’s response was no. This is an issue because it
shows that most of the individuals that took the survey were spank. Being that most of the
student is Tuskegee University are Black and shows connection to the history that surrounds
Blacks.

Discussion:
Graph 6 illustrates how the respondents opinion towards parents being allowed to spank their
children. Most of the individuals responded that they were in accordance with the allowance
of corporal punishment; 78% percent agreed and 22% differed. I am pretty sure that the
respondents didn’t even bothered or stopped to read the explanation of what corporal
punishment is. A lot of times people believe that the disciplining of children should only be
left to the parents, but when it becomes a dilemma; like children getting seriously injured,
then other people care to intercede.

Discussion:
This Pie graph exemplifies the percentage of respondents who agree and disagree whether
corporal punishment works better than other disciplinary methods, which don’t involve
physical pain. The data compiled in this section shows that the respondent’s opinion was torn
on what answer they should pick. This data showed that almost the equal amount of
respondents agreed and disagreed; 52% did and 48% didn’t. These results are good because
it shows that although most respondent thought that using corporal punishment was ok, a lot
of them believe that it is not the best way of disciplining their child.

Discussion:
By including this question on the survey I understood that there might be some sort of association on
the subject. The data tabulated illustrates that the majority of the respondents were not in trouble with
the authorities, 81% of them; on the other hand 19% were. I was surprised on the truthfulness that
can be seen in question, a high number of respondent were honest about their past problems. I think
that most of the respondents that were not in trouble with the authorities were because of the
disciplinary methods that their parents were using upon them. However, there was still a significant
percentage that was, which shows that the disciplinary methods used upon them were no effective.

Discussion:
This graph exemplifies a question that was really straight forward and received great support.
79 percent of the respondents strongly believed that agreed that they deserved the
punishment that they received and a small 21% didn’t. This shows that many didn’t objected
and agreed with the way that they were disciplined. This might be the reason why the
majority of the individuals will continue implement that modes of discipline that was used
upon them.

Discussion:
This graph demonstrates the likeliness and unlikeliness that the respondents had towards using
corporal punishment in their children. Only a small percentage of 13% stated that they were very
unlikely to spank their kids, as a form of punishment; followed by 14% that stated that they were
unlikely to do so. This is one of the most relevant data from the study, because it should the
percentage of surveyed individuals that will continue to use spanking as a form of discipline. On the
other hand the highest percentages of respondents that will maybe, likely, and very likely to spank
their children. 25 percent of the respondents are unsure whether they will use the methods or not;
followed by 21% likeliness and 27% of very likeliness.

Discussion:
This Bivariate graph illustrates the sentiments that respondents have towards spanking, whether if it
is yes it is okay or no it is not. The graph divided into the different age categories of the respondents.
The table exemplifies that most of the respondents in the various age groups are in agreement with
spanking. The group that seems to have the strongest sentiments were the students under the age of
21. The few respondents who opposed the act of spanking towards children couldn’t be compared to
the amount of students that agreed. This shows that it will not be overnight, when the respondents
start changing their mindset, but evidently a progress is being made.

Discussion:
In the multivariate graph we can see the percentages of respondents that agree with the act of
spanking by the different age groups controlling for gender. As we observe the graph we
notice that the findings coincide for the respondents that belong to the age group of 25-40
and 41-54, the same amount of males and females that agreed in one group agreed in the
other one. It can also be seen that the respondent from the age group of under 21, and 21-24,
the males showed to have more accordance versus the number of females that did.

Discussion:
This Bivariate graph looks at whether or not the respondents have received spanking as
means of discipline from their parents, taking into observation of the responses by the
different age groups. What the findings show is that most of the students were spanked when
they were younger. Although the number of respondents that did receive that form of
punishment were high, we could still see that good percentage of them didn’t.

Discussion:
Contained in the graph are the yes answers that students gave, according to the various age
groups and gender. The data shows that most of the students were spanked when they were
younger, and that most of the respondents that were spanked were males. This is seen when
looking into the two youngest age groups, in both groups the number of males that got spanked
was higher surpassing by almost 10% more than the number of females. Surprisingly, the
number of respondents that belonged to the age group of 25-40, were equally spanked. Looking
into the two last groups was the complete opposite, in the age group of 41-54 100% of the males
were spanked; and in the group of 55 and over 100% of the females received all the punishment.

Discussion:
The last Bivariate table that is illustrated is the one that shows the percentages of respondent
that said they were going to be likeliness and unlikeliness they would use spanking as means
of discipline. The ranges of sentiment of probability ranged from 1 very unlikely to 5 very
likely. As it can be observed the widest range of responses came from the respondents of a
younger age. Between these two groups the category that showed the highest number was the
option of likely with 61.9% of the responses; followed by the maybe category with 56%.
This shows that overall numbers in these age groups will be participants of doing the act.

Additional Analysis & Conclusion

As most of us know, the blessing of having children is something that should be
highly cherished and not taken for granted. There are a lot of individuals that wish they had
the fortune of being able to procreate, but they can’t. The individuals that fall responsible
under the role of parenthood should really stop and analyze to determine on what are the
methods they are and should be using to educate their children. Becoming a parent in this
world is a very hard task, a commitment that comes along with endless numbers of
responsibilities. Part of the commitment involves the investing of love, dedication, time,
money, and self control. In my opinion, I believe that the fault that most parents fall victims
of is when it come to self control, and when that happens the act of brutal corporal
punishment is one of the factors that comes into the picture. I think that using corporal
punishment is acceptable, but there has to be a control over the amount that is practiced and
the reasons of why it used. When parents don’t have those too clearly defined and just start
beating theirs kinds for no significant reason, the use of this type of punishment becomes
something that should be unacceptable and not tolerated. A lot of parent go over the verge
and abuse their children without taking their little lives into consideration; whether if they
implement corporal, psychological, or emotional means, the way that they implement these
forms should be moderately.
When I began to conduct this survey a lot of thoughts on how the results would come
out where present. I felt that I knew what the opinions of my peers would be. One of the
conclusions that I drew was that a higher number of female respondents would be more
acceptable toward the means of using spanking to discipline. I also considered that since the

survey was going to be conducted in an HBCU, the majority of my answers were going to be
one sided, because the use of spanking are accepted and respected amongst the Black
community. I also concluded that a continuation of a chain reaction would come about; since
most of my peers were spanked most of them will spank their off springs as well. A lot of the
thoughts I had were supported with the results that came about.
When I looked in the different tables and graphs I noticed that lot of this shocked me,
such as the level of likeliness of peers will use spanking as a form of discipline towards their
children. Although the majority of them were spanked, there results of the future behavior
had a wide range of variation. After completing this first project, there has been a series of
conversations dealing with the opinions of the Tuskegee student body have been conducted
with regards to the issue. The university has students from all the various groups of ages, and
even thou the majority of the respondents were of younger age, I got a change of discussing
the subject in matter with individuals of older groups.
