Compare and Contrast

ESSAY BOOT CAMP

LT: I can write a compare and contrast essay by finding an important similarity, distinction, and
big picture idea between two short stories.
LT: I can manage my class time well by having short, manageable goals throughout the class
period.

Reminder: Those who have not filled out the BOOK GROUP survey should do that now.

THE PLAN: I will give the class the general plan for the day. Our goals and the model. Set up
note cards. (5 min)

MINI-LESSON: I will briefly go over what a good similarity sounds like and what some not so
great ones sound like. I will write some on the board. (5 min)

SPRINT: Students will spend the next 5 minutes in a silent sprint to write, rewrite, or revise their
similarity.

SHARE OUT: Students will share out with their tables what they wrote. Each student must share
out, and peers will write “GREEN” or “YELLOW” on their notecard whether or not they hit the
target. GREEN is good to go no concerns. YELLOW is “I am confused. Maybe Colton should
take a look.” (5 min)

MINI LESSON: What does a good distinction look like? Not so good? Why. (5 min)

SPRINT: Students will silently run a sprint for their distinction paragraph. (5 min)
SHARE OUT: Students will do the same share out process for their distinctions. GREEN or
YELLOW (5 min)

MINI LESSON: Big picture and mic drop conclusion. Good and bad. (5 min)

SPRINT: Students will silently run a sprint for their conclusion. (5 min)

SHARE OUT: Students will do the same share out process for their conclusions. GREEN or
YELLOW (5 min)

TICKET OUT THE DOOR: Students will turn in their notecards so I have an idea where students
are.
