Detailed Procedure:
Warm-up
12:00-12:05
Teacher task: Ask students about their experience eating at restaurants and to say
the name of food and drinks they would find at a restaurant. The teacher will then
proceed to write the students suggestions on the board to be used for later.
Student task: Students volunteer to share their experience and then start naming
food and drinks.
Skills: Speaking
Rationale: This warm up will get students to practice the target language as well
as activate vocabulary and knowledge that will be useful for the lesson
New Material
12:05-12:15
Teacher task: Introduce students to important vocab and grammar points
that are useful at a restaurant such as:
Parts of the meal: starter/appetizer, entrée/main course, drinks,
dessert
“would like”-polite form used when asking and requesting
After introducing this material have students practice using “would like”
by calling on random students and asking them questions using the phrase.
Ex) Elliot would you like a glass of water?
Student task: Listen carefully and take notes. Ask questions if they are not
understanding. Students who are chosen have to answer the teacher’s
question using the phrase would like
Ex) Yes. I would like to have a glass of water
Skills: Listening, Speaking
Rationale: This introduction helps students know about the different parts
they would find on a menu in a restaurant as well as helps them get used to
using more polite speech
12:15-12:25
Teacher task: Show students a youtube clip of a person ordering food.
Before the video hand out a t/f worksheet that goes along with video. After
the video go over the answers with the students if time allows.
Student task: Pay attention to the video and fill out the worksheet while
watching the video.
Skills: Listening, Reading
Rationale: This will let students view a scenario of a typical exchange
between a waiter and a person ordering food. By seeing this, they will gain
more of an understanding of what to do in this situation
12:30-12:45
Teacher task: Have the students pair up and give them a script. Have them
work together to fill in the blanks on the script. Afterwards have them
practice a role-playing scenario using the script.
Student task: Get into pairs and use the menu given to fill the blanks in the
script. After they finish, they practice a role-playing scenario where one of
them is the waiter and the other is the person ordering. After going
through the script, they switch roles
Skills: Writing, Speaking, Reading
Rationale: By role-playing it allows students to actively prepare for real
world situations
Wrap-up
12:45-12:50
Teacher task: Ask students if they have any questions about today’s class.
Student task: Ask the teacher any questions they may have about the
lesson.
Anticipated Problems and Solutions:
Students may not want to practice the script. Enforce that they do practice by walking
around the classroom and monitor each group. If a group is not actively participating,
then go to the group and ask them if they are having any trouble.
There is an activity that requires pairs; if someone is absent rearrange activities so that
there can be one group of three.
Some students may finish faster than others. Have activity extensions to give to those
students.
