In my research, I came across the article above. It basically talks about how children in
china are specifically affected by having parents who abuse drugs. There is a major concern on
how the spread of illegal drug use in parents or even caregiver can affect the mental health of
young children. How can an adult take care of another life if they can not take care of
themselves? This puts children in danger, and can affect their personal life and their education.
The abstract idea in this article, is that children ages 8 to 18 years old have been surveyed on
their mental health and life satisfaction. And it can relate that children that have mental health
issues and those children that are not satisfied with their own life will perform more poorly in
school because they are more focused on what is going on at home rather than the children who
are raised in a supporting non-drug abused home.

Like said in the first article, children who grow up with parents who are addicted to drugs
and the use of substances not only face mental health issues with themselves but also with their
social lives. These children are at higher risk for psychological problems and that can also affect
them in school. Growing up is hard enough, especially in schools and children already having the
pressure to fit in. Children who grow up in households that have drug abusing parents have even
more stress on them since essentially they become the “parent”. The children are also at higher
risk of partaking in drug use as well and will typically lead to hanging out with the kids in school
they can relate too so they can feel like they fit in.

With drug use there comes law involvement and when the laws are broken there comes
incarceration. A child's mental health can be affected when their parent is taken away from them.
Although in some cases incarceration may be for the better, it is still hard for a child to have their
“comfort blanket” taken away. A parent who is using drugs or a parent who is not still have the
same impact on a child and it would really affect them mentally if they were taken away. A child
is more likely to act out in school after they have had stressful, traumatic events going on at
home. Although, this may not be the case for every child, some children are strictly affected
antisocially rather than mentally.

Substance abuse in families typically lead to educational issues. In this article things get a
little more specific. It shows ways that teachers can have a better impact on a student that comes
from one of these substance abusing families. Teachers that take the time to learn more about a
student and the effects on substance uses in families will be a better advocated for the students
they have that have these issues.

I would like to focus on one simple aspect though. Knowing that one child's home life will be
different than the next, I really want to gain a better understanding on how a child's education
can be affected by having parental guardians that are drug and substance abusers. With your
passion of sharing educational instruction with fellow educators who desire to move forward
with teaching the reading process to learners, and mine of making every child gets the education
they deserve I think we will make a great match.
Thank You, Best regards
