Abstract
Heredity of living organisms can be established with the distinction between genotype and
phenotype. Hence, deciphering this is essential for breeding: the search for ideotypes (or per-
fectly fit phenotypes), and this rule includes the analysis of oil palm. Both climate and human
activities interact with information contained in the genetic material to generate phenotypes.
Determining the genetic content of oil palms is very complex due to the different variables
that should be taken into account, and despite many years of research, little is known with
accuracy. However, thanks to the processes of research and progress in the knowledge of
these phenomena, important advances in both the structure of the genome and the mecha-
nism of expression of genes have been made, paving the way for Marker Assisted Breeding.
For a better understanding of these aspects, the terms genotype, phenotype and environ-
ment should be defined. The genotype for asexually reproducing organisms, clonal plants
or animals, the inherited material is a direct copy of the DNA of its parent. The phenotype is
determined by the description of the physical and behavioral characteristics of the organism,
for example its size, shape, color or metabolic activities; and the environment is not only the
outside world, but also the cellular and sub-cellular environment
These three concepts interact and influence each other, for example, a change in the en-
vironment can affect the phenotype; hence, the breeder works with phenotypes and makes
inferences about genotypes, using statistics and bioinformatics.
