Cooperative Games
Cooperative games emphasize participation, challenge and fun rather than defeating someone. When there are no winners and no losers, kids can simply play within the structure of the game and enjoy the company of others. One thing that makes cooperative games so much fun is that everyone can play, the game can be modied to meet the needs of special-needs children and no one is likely to get hurt. Cooperative games are not new. Some of the games are classic because of the play emphasis. There may be competition involved, but the outcome of the competition is not losing and sitting out the rest of the game. Instead, it may involve switching teams so that everyone ends up on the winning team. Some of the cooperative games included can be used as icebreakers.

Botticelli
Materials: None One girl is it. It must think of the name of a person or a ctitious character. This character is referred to by the initial of his or her last name (e.g., Mr. F.). The players, in turn, ask it yes or no questions to discover the name of its character. However, they must earn the opportunity to ask each question by asking it to name a character with the same initial in response to their questions. For example, it begins play with the statement, I am thinking of a Mr. B. A player then asks it a question such as, Was Mr. B. a president? If it cannot name a president whose name starts with B, the player has earned the right to ask it one yes or no question for a clue to the characters identity. However, if it is able to name a Mr. B. who was a president, that person forfeits the opportunity to question it. The player who correctly guesses the name of its character is the new it.

Caterpillar

When she gets to the front she jumps up, her waist gets grabbed and the girl who is now at the back goes through. You can either do this down to the nish line or down and back. For the later, when the girls reach the turning point they spin around so they are facing back the way they came and do it again.

Face-Off
Materials: None Girls stand in a circle so everyone can see each other. Start by doing face stretches, creating an air of gooness and safe space for play. The facilitator starts by making a strange, distorted, crazy face. When everybody sees it, the facilitator turns to their left. The second person carefully copies the expression, and then both people turn to the middle. The circle claps or cheers to indicate how successful the copy, or Face-Off, is. Then, the second person turns to their left and shares a new crazy expression with the person next to them. Go all the way around the circle.

Five Changes
Materials: None Choose partners. Partners sit facing each other and decide who will be the guesser and who will be the dresser. All the guessers will close their eyes, but before they do, they take a good look at their partner(s) the dressers. They carefully look them over to see what clothing they are wearing, if they have on glasses, a hat or watch, bow or barrette in their hair, etc. Guessers then close their eyes. Dressers then make ve changes to their appearance. They can roll up a sleeve or remove a ring, switch a watch to the opposite hand, take off their shoes or even socks! The changes are up to them. When they are nished, guessers are told to open their eyes and to try and guess all the changes that were made. If they have difficulty, clues can be given. Hawaiian Hand Clap

Materials: None The players sit in a circle or a line and count off. Then they set up a 1-2-3-4 rhythm by slapping their knees, clapping their hands, and snapping their ngersrst their right and then their left. Everyone does this in unison. Once the rhythm is established, the rst player calls his or her own number on the rst nger snap and someone elses number on the second nger snap. On the next sequence of nger snaps, the person whose number was called must say his or her own number and someone elses. Hula Hoop Relay

Materials: Hula hoop Have the girls pass the hula hoop over their bodies while their hands remained linked. When they get the hang of it, introduce a second hula hoop.

Human Knot
Materials: None Girls get in a circle and put their right hands in the center. Girls grab hands without looking at whose hands they are grabbing. Then, they put their left hands in the center and grab a different hand than the one they already have. They are knotted up and have to untangle without letting their hands go. The girls will probably need to do more than just twisting. You may need to prod them into climbing over or going under hands to become unknotted.

Humming Game
Materials: Room contents One person will be asked to perform a simple task. The challenge is that they will not know the task and that they will need to determine the task by the volume of the groups humming. One volunteer will step out of the room, and the group will have two decisions to make: the task for the volunteer to perform and a song that everyone knows that they can hum. The task can be pretty much anything putting a chair on a table, writing their name on the board, recycling a piece of scrap paper, or most anything the group can imagine. (Tasks should involve some object or person in the room.) The song should be something that everyone in the group knows such as Happy Birthday, Twinkle Twinkle, or The Alphabet Song. The volunteer is asked to return. As the volunteer starts to walk around the room, have the group hum louder as the volunteer gets closer to the task and softer as they get farther away. It may take a while, especially during the rst round.

Materials: None Everyone is seated in a circle with it standing in the middle. It sits in the lap (or sits in front) of the seated person of her choice, looks them in the eyes, and says, If you love me, wont you please, please smile? The seated person responds by saying, You know I love you, but I just cant smile. This must be said without smiling. If she says this without grinning, the girl in the middle must move on to someone else. If the person does smile, he or she becomes the person in the middle.

Jamaquack
Materials: None To start, everyone stands in a circle, and the leader asks for a handful of very silly volunteers to sit in the center of the circle. Players sitting in the center are jamaquacks. Players standing on the circle are now asked to hold hands, forming a fence or pen around the jamaquacks. A jamaquack moves only backward, bent over, while quacking in its native tongue. Also they cant see. As these players rise to their feet, they begin moving backward, bent over and holding their ankles while continually saying, Jama-quack! Quack! Quack! with their eyes closed. The leader taps the hands of two circle players who then release their held hands, forming an opening in the circle. As the jamaquacks begin searching for their freedom through this door, they will be backing into circle players. It is the circle players job to push or nudge jamaquacks back into the circle with their hands, knees, feet, etc. When nally nding freedom on the other side of the fence, jamaquacks Quack! as loudly as possible to their fellow jamaquacks still trapped on the inside to help them nd their way out. The game is over when all the jamaquacks are free.

Materials: Balloons Blow up one or more ballons depending on the number of players. The simple goal is to work together and keep the balloon in the air. For younger children you may to have them stand or sit in a circle. You can add challenge for older children by restricting how they may elevate the balloon not allowing them to use their hands, only their elbows, etc.

Lap Sit
Materials: None Have everyone stand in one circle, arranging themselves so that someone about the same size as them is on either side of them. Everyone turns to the right. Step in closer to the center and put your hands on the waist of the person in front of you. Concentrate on the person in front of you sitting comfortably on your knees, and trust that the person behind you will guide you, too. First do a trial run. On the count of three the group is going to bend down, touch bottoms to the knees and come right back up to make sure they are all standing closely enough together. Ready? 1, 2, 3. Then ask them to readjust their positions if necessary.

Lego Building
Materials: Legos Lego Picture Break girls into groups of two. One person has a box of Lego blocks. The second has her back to the rst with the picture of what theyll be making. All players must end up on the other side. Rules: 1. Everyone may wear the shoes one time going one way. 2. Shoes may not be tossed back to the other side. 3. Once you have worn the shoes you may not wear them again. 4. Both shoes must be worn by the same person.

Mirror Mirror
Materials: None This is a game that can be played with partners or with a larger group. A leader is chosen to initiate movements the others are to try to mimic as quickly as possible so that it appears they are a mirror image of the leader. Variation: A more challenging version for older children is to eliminate the leader. Players are to both move and simultaneously mimic each other.

Moon Ball
Materials: Beach ball or balloon ball (balloon with cloth cover) Players begin by forming a circle. Toss a beach ball or balloon ball into the circle and see how long the group can keep the ball in the air by counting the number of hits. The leaders job is to lead the group in a series of rhythms. For example, the group may begin by clapping their hands, but every 10-15 seconds the leader should change this motion. They may snap their ngers, pat their heads, tap their toes, or anything else that everyone else can imitate. When the leader changes the motion, everyone else in the group should follow. (An important part of this game is identifying how the players on either side of the leader will follow without giving away the leaders identity.) The detective will stand in the center of the circle and has three guesses to identify the leader.

Partners Up
Materials: None Two girls sit back to back with their elbows linked. Now without letting go, they try to stand up. Its harder than it sounds. Peek-A-Who Name
Materials: One opaque blanket or sheet Ask two people to hold the blanket. With the remainder of the girls, form two teams. The blanket holders hold the blanket up by the ends so that it is vertical or perpendicular to the ground. The teams gather on opposite sides of the blanket. Begin by calling out body parts, such as hip to hip. Partners must then stand so that they are standing with their hips touching. Continue to call out appropriate body parts. Command like nger to shoulder should also be given. Each time a new body part is called out, the pairs must maintain the previous connections, while forming the new ones. Pick-Up Cup
Materials: Paper cups (6 or more per group of 6) Rubber bands String, 8-10 piece per person This game works best with small groups of 5 to 7 people, but can be done with as few as 3 and as many as 9. Before playing this game, the rubber bands and string need to be prepared. Once the number of small groups and number of people in each group has been determined, cut one 8-10 piece of string for each person, tying one end to the rubber band so that each small group will get one rubber band with as many strings tied to it as there are people in the small group. Place the cups rim down and separated within the playing space. Depending on the age of the group, challenge the group to stack the cups or build pyramids. No one may touch the rubber band, any one else or the cups, and each person has to hold their end of the string. With each person pulling and relaxing their strings, the group can expand the rubber band enough to pick up the cups and move them. Challenge the group to complete the task without talking.

Psychic Shake
Materials: None Once youre all in the proper meditative frame of mind, you each settle on a number one, two or three that feels right for you at that moment. You now get to discover your numerical soul-mates. Without breaking the mood (saying anything), you mingle and start shaking hands with one another. If your number is one, you shake someones hand just once; if its two, you shake twice; and shake three times if its three. If you have different numbers, there is an unmistakable moment of tension as one of you tries to stop the shake while the other continues. Those of us with the same number stick together and continue our search for others of like persuasion.

Shrinking Boxes
Materials: Concentric masking tape squares ranging in size from where your chosen group of people can t comfortably down to where the task seems impossible All of the girls step into the largest box. After they accomplish that, have them move another box smaller. Continue to move into smaller boxes until they have to gure out how to t. While they may step on the tape, their shoes (or feet if they are brave enough to do it barefoot) must not be on the ground outside the tape.

Siamese Rolling
Materials: None Its fun to roll down a hill, on a mat, on the lawn, or just about anywhere. Its even more fun to do it with a partner. First, get everyone in the mood by simply rolling around like a log on the ground. Then have one, two or more players roll another along. Telephone
Materials: None A group of girls can play this game while standing in line waiting for something or sitting in a circle. One girl begins by whispering something into the ear of the girl adjacent to her. Presumably, the same sentence is passed, and because of accidental misunderstandings or creative misinterpretations, it becomes something entirely different by the time its passed through all. You can use this game to illustrate how rumors spread. The only rule is that the secret is only given to you once.

Three-Headed Answer Girl

Materials: None Divide the girls into groups of three. Each set of three will stand up, one at a time, and form a three-headed answer girl by putting their arms around each other. The rest of the girls ask the three-headed answer girl one question. They answer by each speaking one word. Girl number one starts to answer the question. She speaks one word, and the next head says the next word. The third head speaks one word, adding to what the other two have said. The rst girl picks up where the third girl left off, also saying only one word. They continue this way until they make up a sentence that answers the question.

Variation: Create an even greater thunderstorm by banging garbage cans, turning lights on and off, etc.

Toilet Paper Game

Materials: Two rolls of toilet paper This game can be done in a circle as a group, or in two teams, depending on the group and group size. Once everyone is in a circle or two single-le lines, the game can begin. The person at the head of the line or at one point in the circle holds the end of the roll while the roll is unrolled going over the head of each person in the line without breaking. When the roll reaches the end of the line, or the starting point of the circle, it must be passed back, this time going through everyones legs, again without breaking. If at any point the roll breaks into two or more pieces, the roll must be passed to the head of the line or starting point of the circle and the team must begin the whole process again. This can be done as a race against the clock or between two or more teams. Variation: For groups that are really good, try passing the paper over and under, so it goes over the head of the rst person, between the legs of the second person, over the head of the third person and so on.

Toss the Bird

Materials: Bird(s) This is a tag game with a twist. The bird can be a knotted towel or some other soft object suitable for throwing. You can have as many as you think are necessary. Then, step backwards until everyone is stretched out but still able to have a rm grip on the two people whose hands they are holding. Everyone needs to keep their feet planted and lean back as far as they can. They must use the group to maintain their balance. Once they have done this, number off the group into 1s and 2s, alternating around the circle. Then, have the 1s lean in and the 2s lean out at the same time. Each person should be able to lean in or out while being held up by their neighbors.
