Student: Jennifer Tortora Professor Esposito

Course EDU 5230 Date: November 12, 2018
Grade: 1 Topic: Fall Content Area: Science

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES (s) (Lesson Objective(s)*)

After collecting leaves from outside and viewing demonstration about why leaves change colors,

students will turn to create a list of at least three observations about the leaves collected by the

class. They will be graded on the accuracy and well-constructed their responses are.

NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

(you may need more than one standard, all content areas need a content area
standard as well as an ELA standard)
1-LS3-1. Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young plants and

animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents. [Clarification Statement: Examples of

patterns could include features that plants or animals share. Examples of observations could

include that leaves from the same kind of plant are the same shape but can differ in size and that

a particular breed of dog looks like its parents but is not exactly the same.]

Indicator: This standard will be evident when students are observing the difference

between the leaves that we have collected.

1W4: Create a response to a text, author, theme or personal experience (e.g., poem,

dramatization, art work, or other).

Indicator: This standard will be evident when the students turn to their peers and write a

list of observations about the leaves

MOTIVATION (Engaging the learner(s)*)

For the students to become involved and motivated in the lesson, I am going to play a video

about fall on Brain POP Jr.

https://jr.brainpop.com/science/weather/fall/

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
(including Key Questions)
1. Students will listen to the presentation about the fall. They will learn about fall, why

leaves change color and why they fall as well as the different types of trees and leaves.

(What do you think of when you hear the word fall? Why do you think leaves change

colors? Why do you think leaves fall off the leaves?)

Revised 10/25/16
*edTPA academic language
2. Students will be working in a think, pair, share to discuss the differences and their

observations of the leaves with a peer. (What are some of the differences? What are some

of the similarities? What colors leaves do you see? What shapes and sizes are these

leaves?)

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES (Learning Strategies*)

Strategy: Direct Teacher Intervention and Think, Pair, Share

Indicator: The direct teacher intervention will be evident while using Google Slides to explain

why fall. The think, pair, share will be apparent when the students are done completing their

observations about the leaves together and then turn to a peer to discuss their observations.

ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality*)
The English Language Learner will be provided a vocabulary list earlier to guide them through

the presentation as well as their observations. They will also be given a translation device to help

them with their comments.

For students who have Individualized Educational Plans, I will allow them to utilize tablets as a

way to help them type up their observations

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Sample way to differentiate
I am going to differentiate by how the students will respond.

Struggling Students
Tier one is for struggling students; I will allow the students to respond with one to two words.

Average Students
Tier two is for the average students; I will accept the response if it has at least five words.

Advanced Students

Revised 10/25/16

Tier three is for the advanced students. The advanced students will answer the question in a

complete sentence.

ASSESSMENT (artifacts* and assessment [formal & informal]*)

The students will be assessed by their ability to give at least three observations of the leaves. It

will allow me to determine if they understand how to make an observation.

The homework I will assign will allow me to assess their progress as well. The homework is two

quizzes that will also allow me to evaluate their progress.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
In class, after completing the observations, the students will view the PBS video about trees and

why their leaves change color. On the Turtle Diary website, they will complete a word search

about the different seasons. Also, they will complete the coloring pictures of different leaves and

trace the name of each of the leaves (“Coloring Pictures of Different Types of Leaves,” n.d.).

For homework, the students will be assigned the links to watch the video on edpuzzle and answer

questions throughout the video. The kahoot quiz for homework will be a review of the lesson

about leaves and the change of colors.

Revised 10/25/16
*edTPA academic language
The student, with the supervision and guide of the teacher, the students will be working on
matching the leaf to the tree it belongs to on a worksheet (“Worksheet: Matching Types of
Leaves,” n.d.).
Academic Enrichment
The students will be given the “Labeling the Leaves” worksheet. This worksheet has the

different leaves that the students have to identify based off recall but given a word box (“Types

of Leaves Worksheet”, n.d.).
