tlfties.-Ihegovernnentof Indiadecidedin 1954to setup a Boardof management studies
under AICTE to forntulatestandardsand prontoternanagenlent teachingInstitutions.

Hotel Manasement Education had a modest beginning with short progranlnresitt


Nutrition anJFood science,which starledin late fifties. Four collegeswere establishment
in four major metropolitancitiesbetween191 and 1964.The NationalCouncil of Hotel
Managementand CateringTechnologywas set up in 1982-83 to which all the instittrtions
of Hotel Managementrun by the Governmentare affiliated'

Educationin the professionalfield such as Pharmacy,Applied Arts and Crafts, etc. have
also undergonesimilar developmentduring the post-independence period.

Technical Education Programmeduring the first three five years plan were devoted to
expansionof TechnicalEducation to meet the growing demand for technical personnel
at Diploma., Degreeand post graduateLevels. From the fourth Five YearsPlan onwards.
the emphasis was shifted to the improvement of quality and standardsof Technical
E d u c a t i o n . T h i s w a s d o n e t h r o u g h i m p l e r n e n t a t i o no f t h e q u a l i t y I m p r o v e m e n t
programme consistingof three major componentsviz., (1) Provisionsfor M.E./ M.Tech
and ph.D programme , (2) Establishmentof curriculum design and developmentcells,
and (3) shorttenn'Iraining Programmes. Meann'hile.expattsion of institutionsand intake
rentainedat a low level in the Governmeut, Private-aidedand Universitiessector.The
policy shift during eiglttiestorvardspernrittingittvolvernentof Private and voluntarr'
organizationsin settingup of technicaland Manageltlelltinstitutionson self-firtancins
(Non Govt. Brand) basisusheredin an era of unprecedctrted erpansionof the'l'echnical
