Genre Analysis: Business Administration

1. The first article is a memorandum (memo) by Max Drickey. This memos purpose is to

discuss adding cooperate social responsibility programs into Avanade. The intended

audience is directed to the General counsel and secretary of Avanade, David Oskandy.

The purpose of this memo is to persuade Oskandy to add cooperate social responsibility

programs into Avanade and its evident because Drickey continuously repeats and

shows how cooperate social responsibility programs have benefitted other companies.

The memo is credible because Drickey is a part of Avanade and was a Legal Intern at

the company. This source is also reliable because the author also explains how he chose

what articles to reference from. For example, he took into consideration how many

employees the company had and compared it to the number of employees Avanade has.

The author also uses different references online to back up his findings, such as the

organization, The Conference Board, which provides reports on what cooperate social

programs are available to certain sized companies. The author also uses secondary

sources and has a lot of anecdotes. One of his anecdotes would be experiences

companies had with organizations like Salesforce Foundation that the author referenced

to in his source material. The secondary source would be The Conference Board

because this organization collects company reports. The author organized the memo

with headers and bullet points. He doesn’t use a citation style. Writing this genre

analysis for the memo helped me decipher what I was reading. At first, it came off as a

little intimidating because I had never seen a business memo before, so it was

interesting to get to read one and analyze its components.

2. The second article is called “The evolution of the small business and entrepreneurship

field: A bibliometric investigation of articles published in the International Small

Business Journal,” by Thierry Volery and Tim Mazzarol. The purpose of this essay was

about finding out how small business or entrepreneurship is evolving and using

published journal articles to see the change. The audience is people who are interested

in being an entrepreneur or owning a small business. The information in this essay is

to inform others about the characteristics that small businesses hold and the aspects of

an entrepreneur. This source is credible because the author cited all the websites,

articles, and journals used to help defend the thesis of this essay. Both authors are also

credible because Tim Mazzarol is a professor at the University of Western Australia

Business school, he teaches marketing, strategy, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

Thierry volery is also a professor of entrepreneurship and is in charge of Marketing

Discipline at the University of Western Australia Business School. This article is

relatively recent, from 2015. That makes the information more relevant to our time.

The evidence used in this essay is statistical. The authors use a lot of charts and

diagrams, as well as text-based quotes. The author breaks the text into headers,

subtitles, and diagrams and graphs and these help with giving the reader a more in-

depth look at what the author is arguing. The authors use APA citation to cite all of

their sources. Writing this genre analysis for this article helped me understand what I

was reading because I was able to look more into the evidence and look more profound

through the text for this essay.
