A Taste of a Snicker of Magic

Overview
Students will read the book entitled “A Snicker of Magic.” Students will then
demonstrate their knowledge of the book by completing the book project entitled “A
Taste of a Snicker of Magic.” The book project requires the students to choose any
food they wish as a vehicle for their project. Please note that the food must be
naturally broken into sections (Ex: pizza, cake, etc.) because each part of the project
must be included in its own section (Introduction, Setting, Characters,
Plot/Summary, and Opinion). The book project showcases the students’ knowledge
of A Snicker of Magic as well as their creativity.

Essential Questions
 What is the setting in the story?
 Who are the main characters in the story?
 What was the main conflict in the story?
 What events lead up to the main conflict in the story?
 How was the conflict in the story resolved?

Learning Objectives
Students will...
 be able to identify the setting in a story, identify the main characters in a
story, and write a brief summary of a book.

Materials
 Book Project Student Packets
 Samples
Procedures

 Inform the students that they will be required to read the book entitled “A
Snicker of Magic.” Let students know that it is important to take notes as
they are reading. Inform students that after reading A Snicker of Magic,
they will complete the book project entitled “A Taste of a Snicker of Magic.”

 Distribute student packets. Packet includes:


o Book Project Directions
o “Book Bite” Sections
o Samples
o Rubric

 Give students approximately 5-7 minutes to read over the information in the
student packet.

 Discuss the guidelines for completing the book project.


o Emphasize that students can choose any food they wish as a vehicle for
their project.
o Explain that each part of the project must be included in its own
section (Example: Introduction, Setting, Characters, Plot/Summary,
and Opinion).
 Show samples.
o Inform students that all pieces of the project should be clearly labeled
with their name and somehow attached together.
 Show samples.
o Inform students that the project can be made from any medium (paper,
cardboard, wood, foam, poster board, etc.)
o Emphasize that all sections must be proofread for spelling,
capitalization, and punctuation. Also, emphasize that projects must be
neat.

 Discuss the rubric.
