ACTION PLAN

To contribute to the goal of preparing reflective practitioners, student teachers will write an Action Plan at the end of first, second, and third field
experience with input from their cooperating teacher and/or the University supervisor. The Action Plan synthesizes each field experience’s
evaluation, links each field experience to the next, establishes goals for improvement, and forms an agenda for discussion between the student
teacher, the cooperating teacher and University supervisor at the beginning of the subsequent field experience. For First Field Experience only
(excluding Physical Education students), the Action Plan will be completed during the co-requisite Professional Seminar course.

I have shown thorough to advanced development in the following Professional Competencies developed
during this field experience:
- Competency 1: I have shown thorough development in this professional competency by exploring
the secondary culture of my school throughout my stage and trying to get a grasp of how this affects
the students both positively and negatively. In doing so, I realized how important a role the culture
of a school plays on the overall learning environment of the students and I must therefore be self-
aware when stepping into the role of a teacher because I will have a direct impact on the students
through my own values, philosophies and culture.
- Competency 2: I advanced competency 2 in my stage not only through talking and writing, but also
through learning to tailor my communication with students and staff based on the needs of the
situation. By recognizing the importance of mirroring my communication to fit the needs of the
students or situation, I have developed my ability to communicate clearly in the language of
instruction in various contexts related to teaching.
- Competency 11: Throughout this stage I developed my abilities in relation to competency 11 by
engaging in professional development both individually through journaling, self-reflection, and self-
assessment, and with others through communication. Through communicating with fellow McGill
students, students attending the school, and members of the staff, I was able to learn a lot about the
teaching profession and develop my teacher identity furthermore.

I would like to improve my skills in the following Professional Competencies developed during this field
experience
- Competency 1: Although I mentioned this competency as being one that I developed during my first field
experience, I believe I still have a lot to learn. Competency 1 plays an important role in the development of
a teacher identity and teaching philosophy and although I feel like I am developing mine more and more, I
am far from having a concrete idea of what kind of teacher I want to be.
- Competency 9: I believe I must improve this competency because of the part on pursuing the educational
objective of the school. I believe I took for granted the educational objectives of my first school because I
assumed they would be mostly the same as any other school. It is important for me in the future to research
the official educational objectives of my school and learn more about the competencies addressed in a
subject area in order to offer the best possible education to my students.
- Competency 12: I must work on competency 12 because I am still uncertain as to what it entails to
demonstrate ethical and responsible professional behavior in the performance of my duties. In my future
stages I hope to learn more about what responsibilities I have as an ethical teacher and mostly how to
fulfill them.
I will make use of the following strategies for improvement:
- Competency 1: I will continue to explore the secondary cultures of every school I attend for stage. I will
seek out opportunities to visit other schools where I can explore school cultures and critically assess what
aspects I like, which aspects I dislike, and the inevitable consequences of each of these aspects.
- Competency 9: I will research the schools I attend for my next stages thoroughly and find out what their
educational objectives are. I will also try to learn and understand more about the professional competencies
that I am required to master, and the competencies I must apply within my classroom for my teachers. By
learning more about them, I will be a more effective teacher that effectively endorses the provincial and
school curriculums.
- Competency 12: I will further my knowledge on the major schools of thought through research. In doing
so, I will learn more about the different roles a teacher can take on and therefore establish what kind of
teacher I want to be. I will continue to journal and self-evaluate myself in order to keep track of my
progress and recognize my development in relation to forming my teacher identity. I will also attend any
workshops, field days or seminars that may address education and therefore learn with and from others
about various ways to become an equitable and professional educator.
