1. 0 PURPOSE:

To detect lamination / inclusions type discontinuities and to evaluate them as per API 5L 44 th Edition,
BS 5996 & GAIL/MECON specification no. MEC/TS/05/21/012C.

2.0 SCOPE:

Applicable for sizing of indications found in Coil UT Testing. This procedure shall be used to detect
lamination present at pipe ends or prior to angle beam inspection of plate by contact manual UT.

3.0 APPLICABLE CODE & STANDARDS:

API 5L 44th Editions, BS 5996 & GAIL/MECON specification no. MEC/TS/05/21/012C.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY:

Personnel performing Ultrasonic Examination shall be responsible for interpretation & evaluation of
indications during the examination & preparation of examination reports.

5.0 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION:

NDT personnel shall be qualified as per ASNT – SNT –TC – 1A.

5.1 NDT L-I personnel may set up the equipment, shall perform tests and record the results.

5.2 NDT L-II personnel shall supervise Level-I inspector and evaluate, report the results. When required, he
shall carry out test by himself.

6.0 STAGE OF EXAMINATION:

The Manual Ultrasonic Examination shall be carried after forming the pipe, whenever required.

7.0 METHOD OF EXAMINATION:

Straight beam contact method.

8.0 TECHNIQUE:

Pulse echo technique.

9.0 EQUIPMENT USED:

9.1 Flaw Detector - Einstein – II, Make – Modsonic.


9.2 Cable - Co-axial cable with Lemo to mini lemo connectors of length 1.5 to 2.5 meter.
9.3 Search Unit – Dual crystal Straight beam probe of 4 MHz 25 mm dia. and 4 MHz 10 mm dia.

10.0 SCANNING SURFACE:

The surface shall be free from dirt, loose scale, rust, spatter and other foreign matters which may
interfere with testing process.

11.0 COUPLANT:

Water shall be used as couplant.

12.0 CALIBRATION STANDARD BLOCKS:

Reference block, V1, V2 and step block

13.0 INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION:

The vertical and horizontal linearity of the machine is checked once in three months and the details of
the calibration data shall be recorded.

14.0 REFERENCE STANDARD BLOCK:

Flat bottom hole of 6.35mm dia. (as per attached sketch) in the same material having same thickness.

15.0 CALIBRATION PROCEDURE:

15.1 Set the range that of double the thickness.

15.2 Adjust indication from FBH to 80%. Note down reference dB.

16.0 CALIBRATION FREQUENCY:

Instrument calibration shall be done at the beginning and to be checked in the middle & at the end of
each shift.

17.0 SCANNING SPEED:

The scanning speed shall not exceed the 6 inch / second.

18.0 TESTING PROCEDURE:

Scanning shall be done by moving the bigger search unit (25mm dia.) in swiveling motion on scanning
surface with 10 % overlap.

18.1 Any indication observed during scanning with 25mm dia probe whose strength is exceeding 80%FSH at
reference dB shall be investigated in terms of depth and size by a smaller 10 mm dia. probe.

18.2 Marking of the Discontinuity:

For marking / sizing of indications, 6 db drop method shall be used.

19.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:

When inspecting indications marked by coil UT machine acceptance criteria shall be as follows:

A. EDGES:

Acceptance level E2 of BS: 5996-1993 which is reproduced hereunder for ready

(1) No individual imperfection of length less than 20mm shall be considered for population density
assessment
(2) Maximum length of imperfection in any direction shall not exceed 30 mm.
(3) Maximum area of imperfection shall not exceed 500 mm2
(4) Maximum population density shall not exceed 4.

B. PLATE BODY:

Acceptance level B4 of BS: 5996-1993 which is reproduced hereunder for ready

(1) No individual imperfection that does not exceed all of the following dimensions shall be considered
for population density assessment ;
Area: 300 mm², length: 35 mm, width; 8 mm
(2) Maximum area of imperfection shall not exceed 1000 mm2
(3) Maximum population density shall not exceed 10
(4) Any imperfection exceeding 100mm in length shall not be acceptable and any planar imperfection
not parallel to the plate surface is not acceptable.

20.0 DOCUMENTATION:

Examination results shall be recorded in test report no. PIL/SAW/QC/F-18.
