CONTEMPORARY ARTS

Pambansang Alagad ng Sining ng Pilipinas


- Or the National Artist of the Philippines is the highest recognition thet Philippine government
can give to a person of the arts
- The award was created through Presidential Proclamation No. 1001, s. 1972 to give
recognition and respect to the citizens who have given outstanding contribution to the
Philippine arts
- This award is supposed to be given every three years as mandated by the rules of the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)

How do you become a National Artist:


An announcement will be made for the opening nominations,
1. The artist must be a Filipino citizen or at least at the time of the nomination. An artist who has
passed on can still be nominated as long as he/she was a Filipino before they died
2. The artist should have contributed “in building a Filipino sense of nationhood” as seen in their
works
3. The artist should have lead the way in new and creative expression or style, separating
themselves from others and in turn influencing other generations of artists
4. The artist’s work should be noteworthy and an embodiment of excellence, further enriching
their chosen field of creative expression
5. The artist should be critically acclaimed and accepted by legitimate institutions and peers

Once qualified, nominations will be studied and reviewed by the NCCA and CCP; other than
prestigious recognition, National Artists also receive other benefits such as:
1. The title and rank of a National Artist
2. Medal bearing the insignia of National artist as well as citation
3. A cash gift of P100,000 to the living artist and )75,000 for those who were recognized after
their death, which will be given to the heir of the awardee
4. Monthly pension with medical and hospitalization benefits
5. Life insurance to those who are still qualified
6. State funeral and interment at the Libingan ng mga Bayani
7. A reserved place at state functions, awarding ceremonies, and cultural events

 Has dedicated himself in the documentation and preservation of his ethic commuinity’s
oral traditions
 Love for his people’s epics began when he was a child. His mother would chant these
tales while swaying the crib
 His interest in the tales soon drove him to learn these chants for himself, often asking
him to be taught chant in exchange for his chores
 His passion and pride for his Panay-Bukidnon heritage has brought him to many
barangays, trying to convince the elderly to learn to read and write which in turn they
can use to write down their communities, indigenous beliefs, traditions and stories
 His influence has gone far beyond just his community, he has opened the eyes of many
academics and artists to the beauty of the Panay-Bukidnon oral traditions

Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan
- The National Living Treasures Award
- Was institutionalized through Republic Act No. 7355
- Tasked with the administration and implementation of the award is the National Commission
for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)
- Is conferred on Filipinos who are at the forefront of the practice preservation, and promotion of
the nation’s traditional folk arts
- Main objective of the award is to honor and support traditional folk artists and to see to it that
their skills and crafts are preserved

NCCA
- Conducts the search for the finest traditional artists of the land, adopts a program that will
ensure the transfer of their skills to others, and undertakes measures to promote a genuine
appreciation of the arts, and instill pride among our people about the genius of the Manlilikha
ng Bayan

Emblem
- The award logo is a representation of the human form used in traditional cloth
- Below the logo is the phrase “Manlilikha ng Bayan” written in Baybayin (an ancient Filipino
script used in the 16th century)

Process:
1. The panel
- Is administered by a committee which is assisted by an ad hoc panel of experts

2. The nominations

3. The screening
- Ad hoc search committees are deployed to various priority areas in the country to
conduct searches and document the candidate’s art or craft

Awards and incentives


- Awardee receives a specially designed medallion, initial grant of Php100,000
