PROCEDURE
Introduction Time

 Slide 1 Review what theme means. Theme is a life lesson, meaning,


moral, or message about life or human nature that is communicated by
a literary work. What the story teaches us.
5 min
 Slide 2 Analyze a short paragraph and have table groups brainstorm
possible themes for the paragraph. Give students 3 minutes and then
share.
 Slide 3 Possible themes of paragraph.
Body Time
Setting
 Discuss what setting is, have students tell you
what they think that setting is.
 Slide 4 – Setting is the when and where a story
takes place.
20 min
 Ask students, what should we include when we
are creating a setting?
o Time of day
o Weather
o Location
o Time Period
 Importance of the setting, Setting helps us to
visualize where the story is taking place, if we
didn’t know the setting the story would not be as
affective.
 Slide 6
 Give students a vague sentence. This story takes
place in an old house, that is no longer lived in.
 Ask students if they know what picture that I am
referring to?
 Give students about 5 minutes to develop their
own setting for these pictures, and have them
share with a partner, the partner will then guess
what house they are talking about. We will then
share a few with the class and the class can guess
what the picture the other student is talking
about.

 Introduce book by say, “this is a book about a

 Ask students to listen for details about the
setting.
 Read the book to students.
 Pause throughout the book and ask students how 30 min
the author gives us clues about the setting
without explicitly stating the setting.
 Have students go back to their seats and
complete the setting analysis sheet (this should
take about 10 minutes)
If some student finish fast, they can draw a picture to
effectively convey the setting.
Conclusion Time
 Have students share their idea about setting in “Little Water and the
gift of the animals”. 5 min

Assessment

 Setting Analysis sheet, students will retell the setting of “Little Water and the gift of
the animals” in their own words, this will help me to analyze who is struggling with
setting and who is understanding setting. (Learning Objective 1).
