Cooperative Learning Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class

Fourth grade, 24 students, 1 learning disabled, 1 gifted, and 1 ELL

II. Subject/Skill

Science skill: matter (gas, liquid, solid)

III. Objective(s)

SWBAT define, compare, and contrast the three states of matter: gas, liquid and solid after
reading from the chapter in their textbook with 85% accuracy.

IV. Procedures

Tell the students that today they are going to learn about the states of matter which are gases,
liquids, and solids using the cooperative learning strategy called Jigsaw. Advise them
that they will be working in groups today that are chosen at random. Separate the
class into 6 different groups with 4 students per group. There will be two groups for
each state of matter.

After separating them into groups, direct them to read the chapter in their book that is own the
states of matter. They will be given 15 minutes as it is a short chapter. Once finished
they will begin on a short PowerPoint with their whole group on their assigned state
of matter. Let the students know that you are looking for 4 different things in their
presentation. A formal definition, a drawing/picture using molecules, 2 examples, and
how the state of matter changes to the other two states. Give the students 45 minutes
to complete this short presentation, and then have every group present. Advise
students to take notes if needed.

V. Materials

4th Grade Science Textbook

6 computers for PowerPoint
States of matter assessment

VI. Grouping Structures

Whole group to instruct them of their assignment

Jigsaw (aka small groups)
Individual for assessment
VII. Modifications

Gifted: Have students research other states of matter (colloids and plasma) and share their
findings with the class

Learning Disabled: (dyslexic) Have the student have extra time reading the text and for the
project (only if needed, since they will have their peers to assist).

ELL: Have the student have extra time reading the text and for the project (only if needed, since
they will have their peers to assist).

VIII. Assessment

Give the students a worksheet with all three states of matter. They are to define, draw, give one
example, and explain how you can change the states of matter. Let them know that
this is homework and is due tomorrow. They should have no problem answering the
questions as they read the chapter and viewed their peer’s presentations. Everyone is
to score at least an 85%.
