Theme Statement In order to achieve freedom, individuals can develop
integrity to overcome fear.
Point Evey’s initial actions demonstrate that overwhelming fear prevents
individuals from being free.

Proof After taking refuge with Gordon, Evey criticizes him for joking about
being V, arguing that “people have been black-bagged for less.”

Analysis Evey’s criticism of Gordon for disparaging the government suggests


(Demonstrates, that her fear is keeping her from attaining true freedom and living

critical of the news for being propaganda, and she even helps V
escape. However, even though she agrees with Gordon, she criticizes
him out of fear. In doing so, she is privileging her physical safety over
the values that she holds. Evey is trying to avoid the fate of her
parents, who were “black-bagged” for speaking out against the
government, a violent act that both figuratively and literally removed
their identities. What Evey fails to recognize is that by betraying her
own beliefs when she criticizes Gordon, she is likewise effectively
denying her freedom and identity.
