BALANCE OF ROTATING MASSES

1- The rotating system shown in the figure has 𝑚1 , 𝑚2 and 𝑚3 of 12, 3 and 10 kg, respectively and 𝑅1 ,
𝑅2 and 𝑅3 of 200, 300 and 150 mm, respectively. It is required to determine
1. Amount of the required unbalance.
2. Magnitude and location of a balancing mass if it is to be placed at a radius of 250 mm.

CAM DESIGN
1- A cam, with a minimum radius of 25 mm, rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 240 rpm is to be
designed to give a roller follower at the end of a valve rod, motion as follows: (i) to raise the valve
thought 50 mm during 120o rotation of the cam with linear motion, (ii) to keep the valve fully raised
through next 30o, (iii) to lower the valve during next 180o with a linear motion and (vi) to keep the
valve closed during the rest of the cam revolution. The diameter of the roller is 20 mm and the diameter
of the cam shaft is 25 mm.
1. Draw the displacement diagram for one complete revolution of the cam.
2. Draw the profile of the cam when the line of the valve rod passes through the axis of the camshaft.

2- It is desired to construct a displacement diagram that will provide: constant velocity (linear motion)
rise for 180o thought 45 mm to reach the total lift; 60o of dwell, and linear motion on the return through
120o rotation of the cam shaft. If the minimum radius of the cam is 25 mm, rotating clockwise at a
uniform speed and the diameter of the roller is 20 mm and the diameter of the cam shaft is 25 mm.
The cam shaft rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 720 rpm.
1. Draw the displacement diagram for one complete revolution of the cam.
2. Draw the profile of the cam when the line of the valve rod passes through the axis of the camshaft.

3. It is desired to construct a displacement diagram that will provide: constant velocity (linear motion)
rise for 180o thought 40 mm to reach the total lift. The follower returns through a linear motion. If
the minimum radius of the cam is 20 mm, rotating clockwise at a uniform speed and the diameter of
the roller is 15 mm and the diameter of the cam shaft is 20 mm.
1. Draw the displacement diagram for one complete revolution of the cam.
2. Draw the profile of the cam when the line of the valve rod passes through the axis of the camshaft.
