“There’s Help All Around You” Campaign for Mental Health Wellness: The “There’s Help All Around
You” campaign, tailored for elementary, middle, and high school students, explains common
mental health challenges and encourages help-seeking behavior among students in an age-
appropriate way. The campaign will promote mental health understanding and dialogue, and
decrease shame, prejudice, and uncertainty surrounding these challenges. The campaign will also
point students and parents to available mental resources in schools and communities including
guidance counselors, social workers, school mental health consultants, substance abuse
prevention and intervention specialists, and community school mental health providers. Read
more about the campaign here: https://www1.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/569-18/city-

It's Flu Season! The flu shot is recommended by the NYC Health Department for all New Yorkers
aged six months or older. Between July 1 and December 31 of each year, all children who are
between the ages of 6 months and 59 months and attending a New York City licensed pre-
kindergarten, group child care or school-based child care program must receive one dose of
influenza vaccine. The City encourages all parents to have their children vaccinated by the child’s
doctor. To learn more about this year’s flu shot, families should speak with their health care
provider and visit https://www1.nyc.gov/site/doh/health/health-topics/flu-seasonal-schools.page

Head Lice: New York City schools have a “no head lice” policy which means that any student who
has lice in their hair or scalp is not allowed to attend school until they have received treatment
Students will be reexamined in 14 days to confirm that they have remained lice-free. Students with
nits and no evidence of live head lice will not be excluded from school. Lice pass from person to
person by direct contact or by sharing clothing with lice on them. Head lice causes itching,
commonly at the back of the head and neck or behind the ears. Many effective creams and
shampoos are available over the counter or by prescription from your doctor. Following treatment,
a child will be allowed back in school if his/her hair is free of lice upon reinspection. “No Head
Lice” policies are supported by national organizations such as American Academy of Pediatrics,
American Public Health Association and the National Association of School Nurses. Similar policies
have been adopted successfully by school systems throughout the country. We recommend that
you remind your child not to share personal items such as brushes, combs or hats with other
students. For more information visit https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/health-and-
wellness/staying-healthy/head-lice

P.S. 139: The PS 139 Parent Association held its annual Harvest Night celebration on October 27th.
Kids came in costume and enjoyed tons of games and activities. New this year were CSI and
Escape rooms for the older kids. Outside, there was a pumpkin patch full of real pumpkins for
picking and decorating. Parent volunteers donated delicious food and treats and helped to run
the whole event. At the end of the evening, it was time for everyone's favorite monster mash
dance in the auditorium. Kids from all grades got up on stage to get down to Michael Jackson's

On November 6, 2018 District 22 invited our families to attend a Celebration of Diversity. Many
parents came out on a gloomy rainy day to Brooklyn College, from all corners of the District.
Families enjoyed hands-on STEM activities with Littlebits Learning, received give aways, parent
resources and shared breakfast together. Our guest speaker was Ms. Joyce Moy, Director of Asian
American/Asian Research Institute, CUNY, who spoke about our diversity in District 22. We are
grateful to Dean Bedford and Brooklyn College for hosting our event. A slide show is available to
view here.

P.S. 203: P.S. 203’s Title 1 Meeting and breakfast with Principal Miller was a productive session.
Principal Miller spoke to our parents/guardians that attended the Title 1 meeting about its
requirements, goals, objectives, and the importance of the parental involvement that is one of the
essential elements needed to meet the District School improvement initiative. Principal Miller and our
parents talked about a mutual collaborating in school’s activities that directly and positively affect
the educational progress of our children. Our parents were able to chat with Principal Miller where
they voiced their questions, concerns, and we discussed all the wonderful things happening at 203
that support our students and their parents’ population. The parents discussed all the wonderful
activities already happening at P.S. 203 and also brought new ideas to the table that can utilize to
continue to bring positive change to the school. The Eye on Education program created by Dr. Ezra
Cohen and Dr. Haim Cohen after NYCDOE and OSH determined that students would benefit from
wearing prescription glasses and do better in school drop by for another visit! Three eye doctors from
the team transformed one of our classrooms into an Optometrist Office and went to work. They
examined over 140 students in one day and gave away eyeglasses to the ones that needed
them. In more good news, P.S. 203 is a 2018 grant recipient from VH1 Save The Music
Foundation Look for them in the video! here

special guest. He spoke to the entire school about being in space (eating, sleeping and the best
part, using the bathroom). He also left a Mars Rock that each child got to touch. It was amazing.

P.S. 152: November was a busy month at PS 152. We

partnered with PS 315, our CBO’s 21st Century and
FDC, to host our 1st Annual Muffins with Mom event on
Friday, November 16th. Moms and caregivers, came
out to have muffins with their children. We had a
gifted singer serenade everyone. Some of the moms
even belted out a tune! We continued our Breast Cancer Awareness, by having the Mobile
Mammogram bus come to our school to give free Mammograms to women in the community
who were over 40 years old. The state of art Mobile Mammogram bus came to us courtesy of the
Italian American Cancer Society. Health was on our mind this month. On Saturday, November

NYC Well, just to name a few, came to give information to our community members. A Pharmacist
from Rite Aid was on hand to give out free flu shots! We couldn’t let the Fall season go by without
having a Fall Harvest Festival. Our students were treated to day of fun and games. Every student
also received a free apple/pumpkin courtesy of our Parent Association. We ended the month with
a Multicultural Day Celebration. Our talented students showed off their dancing skills, participated
in a country specific fashion show and took a “tour” around the world as they learned about the

I.S. 278: The New York City Department of Sanitation came to Marine Park Junior High school in
order to kick off a “No Litter Week” beginning November 25th to December 1st. Presenters from
the city’s Department of Sanitation came to speak to the students about the negatives of littering
and to discuss different ways they can help clean up their community. Students will be involved by
cleaning up their neighborhood in order to make the streets more presentable. Students are
extremely eager to participate and will be receiving community service for their participation.

I.S. 240: As an introduction to project-based learning, 6th grade students worked individually and in
groups to develop a multidisciplinary portrait of themselves and the class of 2021. Proactively, this will
create instant opportunities for students to get to know one another, and to identify common
characteristics of their classmates while demonstrating their uniqueness. Students and teachers both
benefited through positive team building to set the standard for their time in I.S. 240. “This Is Us”
challenged students to answer: How will we meet the challenges of middle school? What impressions
do we want to show the world about ourselves?” Parents were invited into their child’s classroom for
the morning. Here, they engaged in a parent gallery walk, accompanied with presentations, where
they were surrounded by student work across all subjects. Welcome to the HUDDE Family 6th Class of
2021! 7th and 8th grade students at I.S. 240 visited the NY Aquarium for Con Ed sponsored STEM Day
Out. Students were able to see an animal up-close and put their observation skills to the test!

P.S. 222: Our fifth-grade students competed in our annual Spelling Bee. We were fascinated by the
spelling skills of these intelligent students. Our three finalists will compete in the citywide
competition in a few weeks. Thank you to Ms. Snow and Ms. Lapidus for coordinating this event.
P.S. 222 students are computer programmers. Our STEM Teacher, Ms. Martin worked with Ms.
Tartaglione and Class 424 to program their computers for The Red Ball Challenge. The students
had to work collaboratively to complete the project successfully using laptops and Google Slides.
They created an animation that created the illusion that the red ball was bouncing from one
laptop screen to another. Class 2-313 joined in to observe and celebrate with their fourth and fifth
grade friends. We are so proud of our amazing students!

P.S. 361: P.S. 361 held their Thanksgiving Feast. Public School 361 in partnership with Pink Lily
Organization, Foster Park, and 4RealRADIO came together in an effort to give back and show
thanks to the 361 families and the community that surrounds us. Public School 361 in partnership with Pink Lily

P.S. 52: On Monday, November 19th, P.S. 52 held its 12th Annual Diabetes Walk to raise awareness
about diabetes. Organized by our Physical Education teachers, Mrs. Novella and Mr. Santos, our
families helped to raise $2,500! This year, P.S. 52K Sheepshead Bay began what will be a two-year
residency with the Ensemble Connect School Partnership program. Ensemble Connect is a
collaborative program between Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School, the Weill Music Institute, and the
New York City Department of Education, in which the finest young classical musicians from around
the world are brought together and partnered with NYC DOE schools. Through these residencies,
Ensemble Connect fellows hone their skills not only as professional musicians, but as teachers and
leaders through their time spent working with students and on various other community
engagement projects. For the past several weeks, cellist and graduate of the Juilliard School, Ari
Evan, has been working with cello students and General Music classes at P.S. 52, providing the
students with additional learning opportunities to help bring our Music Program to the next level. On
Tuesday, November 13th, Ari visited P.S. 52 with other Ensemble Connect fellows to present an
exciting and educational performance for the students. Together, students danced, conducted,
and explored various rhythmic ostinatos in music through a performance that proved to be highly
engaging and interactive for all involved. We look forward to seeing the positive impact that the
Ensemble Connect School Partnership has on our students and school community over the next two
years.

P.S. 255: "The faculty and staff of P.S.255 are 'Thankful for P.S. 255'. We showed our school pride by
wearing special shirts to express our gratitude and thanks for such an amazing school!"

M.S. 890: This school year, all MS 890 teachers and instructional staff are reading the book
Culturally Responsive Teaching and The Brain: Promoting Authentic Engagement and Rigor
Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students by Zaretta Hammond. Each month, teachers
read a chapter and discuss the strategies in the book that will be implemented in the classroom.
Thank you to Ms. Czirr and Mr. Sixta for planning and delivering this professional workshop! On
November 9th, students and staff wore red, white and blue to show support for our veterans of
war. Students were visited by two marines, one who served in Iraq and the other who served in
Vietnam. The veterans shared stories from the front lines and of the sacrifices they and their
fellow soldiers made for our country. Students walked away with a greater appreciation and
admiration for members of our armed forces. Thank you to Ms. Turner for organizing the event.

P.S. 312: Sponsored by the Daily News, 3 of our top spellers will attend a District-Wide Spelling Bee
in January. If they advance, they’ll move on to the City-Wide Spelling Bee. Good Luck to all the
students! Representing P.S. 312 at the District-Wide Spelling Bee are: 1st Place Winner - Jahmai J.
(class 5-351, Runner-Up - Djuly S. (class 5-350, Runner-Up - Alessandra T. (class 5-352). Through
Project Based Learning, the Kindergarten students interviewed and learned about the people that
help to make P.S. 312 run smoothly every day. They took what they learned and created a
wonderful presentation. Great job kids (and their terrific teachers too!)

P.S. 193: During the Thanksgiving week, the P.S. 193 hallways were filled with the smell of good
food, the joyful sounds of laughter and comradery between classmates, staff and families, as we
shared meals from around the world. Over the course of 3 days, every class/grade participated in
multicultural celebrations by bringing in foods from around the world and sharing stories about
their culture. The students, staff and families that attended had a wonderful time. Also, our
November School Spirit day was “Flag Day.” The students came in ready to represent their
countries with their flags and some even dressed in their cultural attire.
