Smart Goal Update #1

Smart Goal: I will be able to build an annotated bibliography on resources to help teach a 4th grade SOL
standard.
Grade Four Science SOL Topics:
• Scientific Investigation, Reasoning, and Logic
o Observations, conclusions, inferences, and predictions,
o Objects arranged based of characteristics
o Appropriate instruments used to measure length, mass, volume, and temp
o Independent and dependent variables
o Data collected and communicated with simple graphs, pictures, written statements
• Force, Motion, Energy
o Moving objects
o Electricity
• Life Processes
o Plan anatomy and life processes
• Living Systems
o Plant adaptations
o Energy through food webs
o Habitats
• Interrelationships in Earth/Space Systems
o Weather
o Weather measurements and tools
• Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change
o Planets
o Earth, moon, and Sun relationships
• Earth Resources
o Investigate important VA natural resources

Reflection:
I began my smart goal, by researching what the 4th grade science SOL topics were. From there, I
created a chart that will include all the information I will use to set up my annotated
bibliography. This chart includes a section with the SOL listed, a section for articles that explain
the topic for further understanding, and a section with lesson plan/activity ideas that relate to the
SOL. So far, I have researched one SOL extensively, Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change 4.7,
since it is the SOL, I am doing for my science lesson plan. My plan is to continue researching
each SOL extensively, and then once the chart above is completed, write my annotated
bibliography. As I have started my smart goal, and continue to work on it, I was thinking about
changing my end product to be possibly a website, with all of the information I have researched
instead of writing an annotated bibliography. My thinking behind this little change is that I
would be making a more accessible resource for myself and other teachers to refer to when
teaching a specific 4th grade science SOL.
