Rhetorical Analysis:

Poverty, Education and race Relations

According to Covino and Jolliffe (1995) claimed that rhetoric is related to many different

concepts and just does not have one meaning but several. They both created anthology of

readings, and have interest in literacy, which they both focus on how people learn and develop

the systems of argument in different cultures. Rhetoric scholars use key concepts and make sure

their readers will be able to understand any topic. Being able to make a connection and inform

the person at the same time is a good example of rhetoric. Both Covino and Jolliffe make us

understand there is many types of rhetoric situations such as political movements, marketing,

religious institutions, philosophy and many more can be defined as “portrayal of rhetoric”

(p.328). Therefore, having an open mind when being part of a rhetoric group is the best way to

(Bacon, 1995)view text, gestures, art and theories differently.

The author uses rhetorical appeals effectively by discussing on how each of them work

while working on a research paper. It means learning to recognize the audiences, writers, points

of view and purposes. Always making sure having the right main point of an argument and how

the structure of the paper is being used by the authors. Throughout the discussion both authors

Covino and Jolliffe focus on how the speaker’s effectiveness is while writing a rhetorical paper,

making sure both ethos, pathos and logos have a connection.

Discussion

Audience

Design for Students of education, teachers, and school administrators. William C. has a

PHD as a sociologist and discusses the relations about poverty and how it affects our community,
4

while our students struggle to get an education. Our author discusses the importance of equality

and how it should be focus on instead of being ignored.

Ethos

After reading this the author William C. Kvaraceus, claims that the student’s poverty

affects their education in school, and needing to reduce the dual of poverty and discriminatory

relation in the United States. He mentions how some students’ relations with teachers are being

affected just by how poor they are (p.15). Causing the students to have a different approach when

they attend school instead of treating them equal and giving them a helping hand.

Pathos

Therefore, these students are left with having certain doubts about getting an education or

even attending school. They are left with our words persuading them they are important to this

community and leaving them with the wrong impressions due to the relationships with the

teachers. According to Dexter he mentions how “many dropouts are really pushouts” (p.6). since

many of the students are being forced and treated in the educational system. These students

should be able to have the freedom to speak up against this with other teachers helping them

instead of our actions destroying their dreams.

Logos

In that case, we cannot live knowing these certain differences with poverty do not exist,

we need to learn how to deal with these differences instead of fearing or despising them. There

should be a general recognition that can help develop each student instead of bringing them

down about their low income (p.115) In recent studies more than 47 percent students drop out

from school due to the fact that they cannot afford it.

Conclusion

According to William, these students who are trying to get an education should feel

comfortable in the classrooms with our educators, wanting to learn not worrying about their

financial problems at home. Giving them programs to join such as family education, PTA

involvement, differentiated courses of study and group conferences (p.14). Making them feel

welcome wanting to succeed with their studies.
