FOCUSED TRAINING MODULES

HOW TO USE OUR FOCUSED TRAINING MODULES

STEP 1 Review the Lesson Content

Preview the video training lesson for the module to determine which employees at your
facility could benefit from this training. Focus on the following criteria:

· Who would benefit directly from learning this topic?

· Who should know about the concepts covered in this module?

STEP 2 Complete the Training Plan

List all the employees identified in STEP 1 in your TRAINING PLAN for the module. We
recommend that you identify your employees by job description (such as all the technicians or
operators) and use this to track their progress throughout the training initiative.

STEP 3 Have Your Employees Watch the Video Training Lesson

Have each employee on your training plan sit down and watch the video training lesson. We
suggest that you train from the top down: This will help you get everyone on the same page.

STEP 4 Carry out the On-The-Job Training

Identify a few knowledgeable employees who can take the others out to the plant floor and
cover the ON-THE-JOB TRAINING SHEET. Be sure to complete this step within a week of
completing STEP 3.

STEP 5 Quiz Your Employees

Have each employee on your training plan take the TRAINING QUIZ. To pass the test, your
employees must answer at least 3 out of the 4 questions correctly. If they fail the quiz, have
them repeat STEP 3 and STEP 4 before giving them another opportunity to pass the quiz.

FOCUSED TRAINING MODULE #16
Pascal’s Law and Hydraulic Fluid

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING SHEET

Training Facilitator:

Training Participant:

Training Date:

Training Location: In front of a running hydraulic molding machine.

Repeat Pascal’s Law to the employee:

“When pressure is applied, it is transmitted equally in all directions.”
• Pascal’s law explains that we get equal pressure throughout the system. A central hydraulic
system used to provide hydraulic fluid to each component on the machine.
• This system is similar to your body, where you have a pump (heart) which pumps a pressurized
fluid (blood) to each body component using a central hydraulic system (veins and arteries).

Ask/help the employee understand where pressure is created:

“Pressure is created by resistance to flow.”
• Explain that the hydraulic pump only creates flow – not pressure.
• The hydraulic system has special valves which allow and disallow flow to maintain the desired
hydraulic pressure.
• In some cases, the flow of the pump can be adjusted to maintain the desired line pressure.

In front of the molding machine, explain the hydraulic delivery system on the molding machine.
Explain where the flow originates, flow is delivered, pressure is regulated, and flow is used.

Explain to the employee the hydraulic maintenance procedures at your facility. Be sure to include:
• How often the fluid is tested
• How the fluid is filtered
• How used fluid is recycled

FOCUSED TRAINING MODULE #16
Pascal’s Law and Hydraulic Fluid

TRAINING QUIZ ANSWERS

Passing Score: 3 of the 4 questions must be answered correctly

Question #1:
Pascal’s Law states: (circle one)
A. “When pressure is applied, fluids flow equally in all directions“
B. “When pressure is applied, it is transmitted equally in all directions”
C. “When flow is created, it flows equally in all directions”
D. “When flow is created, pressure is created in all directions”
Pascal’s law explains that we get equal pressure throughout the system.

Question #2:
Pressure is created by resistance to flow. (circle one)
True or False
This concept applies to all aspects of injection molding.

Question #3:
Which is not a correct statement about hydraulic fluids? (circle one)
A. Hydraulic fluids are slippery
B. Hydraulic fluids lubricate
C. Hydraulic fluids take any shape
D. Hydraulic fluids are non-Newtonian
E. All of the above are correct
Hydraulic fluids are:
• Slippery – allowing easy movement
• Lubricating – reduces wear on metal parts
• Fluid – can take any shape
• Newtonian – cannot be compressed

Question #4:
Briefly describe the hydraulic fluid maintenance procedures at your facility.
This is a plant-specific question requiring your input.
