Collection Development Policy


YBVC School Library

1. Introduction

The collection development policy of the School Library seeks to provide specific
and general guidelines for the acquisition of new materials, whether by purchase or
through donations. The Administration and the concerned Faculty have been
consulted for specific collection development criteria and emphasis in their
respective disciplines. The plan is intended to create a few frameworks for
collection development activity that will support the mission and goals of the
School Library.

1.1. Collection Development Objectives

Provide materials that meet the students’ interest and needs in a timely manner.
Provide materials for the students, administration, faculty and staff, to encourage
and to promote continue use of the library. Provide a broadly based and diverse
collection that can support the roles of the library as a popular materials center, a
reference center and an independent learning center. Provide a variety of collections
on all subject areas.

1.2. Vision and Mission of the Library

Vision:
The vision of the YBVC School Library is to become a comprehensive repository of
relevant resources towards promoting a culture of literacy and learning for students and
faculties to achieve quality education and academic excellence and be independent thinkers,
self-directed learners and responsible citizens.

Mission:
The YBVC School Library is devoted to promote personal discipline, independent
reading habits and information literacy skills among students as well as faculty members in
order to build them up as rational thinkers, motivated researchers and forceful leaders.

Specific objectives:

Particularly, it endeavours to fulfil the following:


For the students:
1. To provide guidance to students in terms of print and non-print materials
that will help them in their spiritual and moral values development.
2. To procure a well-organized resource that will meet the demands of the
curriculum and the needs of the students in the pursuit of a relevant and excellent
academic program.
3. To enhance the development of skilful, resourceful and careful users of
the library resources through library instructional program.
4. To guide students in the promotion of an enriched Filipino culture by
providing a collection of resources rich in nationalism, social justice and social
responsibility.
For the Faculty:
1. To provide a wide range and intellectual print collection that will help
strengthen the faculty model in promoting the school’s mission.
2. To procure well–organized resources that will meet the demands of the
curriculum and the needs of the faculty in the pursuit of a relevant and excellent
academic program.
3. To promote varied learning experiences by encouraging the habitual use
of the library resources that will help enrich and satisfy the growth of moral,
intellectual, spiritual and professional faculty.

1.4 Brief history and overview of the collection

The YBVC School Library opens its first door in June 2010. The library was situated then
at the YBVC Extension Building. At that time, the majority of the collections were just
donations from the incorporators of the institution.

Through the subsequent years, additional collections were being purchased due to its
demand. The library can accommodate 10 percent of the total population.

At present, the administration is prompted make additional collections due to the growing
population of the students enrolled. They deemed it best to expand the library collection
through further purchase and acquisition of new resources.

The YBVC School Library has 1 air conditioned unit. The reading area, consisting of 8
long tables, 75 chairs with an acquisition of few volumes of books excluding textbooks.

2. Objectives and Scope of the Collection


The library collection is intended to be a highly selective basic level collection but
sufficient enough to support curricular offerings as determined by the schools mission, goals and
objectives. Materials will include such as few number General References, Textbooks, Books,
Journals, Fiction, non- fiction, pamphlets, and periodicals in various formats.

2.2. Guidelines for Selection

a) Administration, Faculty and staff can recommend the books to be acquired.


b) Students can also recommend the books for procurement provided a faculty member
endorse their recommendation.
c) Relevance to the curriculum
d) Historical and cultural value
e) Cost

2.3. Gifts and Donations

The Library welcomes gifts and donation of books and other materials, subject to the
discretion of the Librarian and Administrator, to contribute to the development of its collection
and services and are reliable with regards to the Collection Development Policy.
2.4. Budget

The administration is the one that controls the budget for purchasing and collection of
books and other materials for the YBVC School Library.

2.5 Criteria for weeding

“Weeding” is the process through which materials are removed and withdrawn from the
library’s collection. Weeding determinations are based on the following factors:

 Multiple copies
 Harass by pest or bookworm
 Ephemeral material (e.g. newsletters, progress reports, pamphlets) including those
materials that lose value after a certain period of time such as: annual reports, directories,
yearbooks, etc.

3. Review and Revision

This Policy will be reviewed and revised as new resources and technologies becomes
available and old ones disappear, and as the needs of the Library and its patrons demand increases
and changes.
