BILL OF MATERIAL

(BOM)
As I have done my summer training in tata marcopolo motors limited and I
have worked on bill of materials (bom). In this company tata have a joint
venture with marcopolo of Brazil which is one of the best company in
designing the bus. so in manufacturing the bus there are number of parts
can be used so assembling of the bus will be divided into these following
sections:-

 Structuring:- in this the skeleton of the bus has been prepared

like:- installing of the engine, radiator, fuel tank, other mechanical
parts related to bus.

 Panelling:- this section deals in making the whole sole upper body
of the bus.

 Painting:- as the name describes this section deals in painting the

bus.

 Trimming:- in this section of assembling the other fittings will be

done like:- fitting of the mirrors, head lights, tail lights, indicators,
inner lights, and many other works related to the finishing touch.

So in each of this process there are various parts can be used so all these
sections will have its own bill of material (bom).

The bill of materials (BoM) is, in its simplest form, a list of parts or
components required to build a product. It provides the manufacturer’s
part number (MPN) and the quantity needed of each component. At its
most complex, the BoM is a multi-level document that provides build data
for multiple sub-assemblies (products within products) and includes — for
each item — part number, approved manufacturers list (AML), mechanical
characteristics and a whole range of component descriptors. It may also
include attached reference files, such as part specifications, CAD files and
schematics.

WHAT IS BILL OF MATERIAL(BOM)?

Bill of materials (BOM) is the term used to describe the "parts list" of
components needed to complete a saleable end-item.
A listing of all materials, components, subassemblies, and the quantity of each
that comprise one assembled product, which may or may not have product
structure. A bill of material can define products as they are designed, as they are
manufactured, as they are ordered, as they are built, or as they are maintained.
There are different types of bills of material dependent upon the disipline that
generates them and the purpose for which they are intended.
BOMs are hierarchical in nature with the top level representing the sub-assembly
or end-item.
For example:- The end-item BOM for a Personal computer would list the
computer, its major sub-assemblies like
 Board,
 Chassis,
 Modem,
 Keyboard,
 Display, etc.

As well as additional materials needed for a complete saleable product –

 Shipping box,
 User manual,
 Packaging,
 Packaging labels, etc.
The BOMs that describe the sub-assemblies are referred to as Modular BOMs.
An example of this is the NAAMS BOM that is used in the automative industry to
list all the components in an assembly line. The structure of the NAAMS BOM is
System, Line, Tool, Unit and Detail.
A bill of material can define products as they are designed (Engineering Bill of
Material), as they are ordered (Sales BOM), as they are built (Manufacturing bill
of material), or as they are maintained (Service BOM).
The different types of bills of materials dependent upon the business need and
use for which they are intended.
A bill of material can be displayed in following formats:

 The single-level bill of material,

 Indented bill of material,
 Modular (planning) bill of material

In process industries the bill of material is also known as the formula,

recipe, or ingredients list
In Electronics BOM represents the list of components used on the printed wiring
board or printed circuit board. Once the design of the circuit is completed, BOM
(Bill of Materials) list is passed on to the PCB layout engineer as well as
Component Engineer who will procure the components required for the design.

REASONS FOR INCORRECTNESS OF Bill OF

MATERIAL(BOM):-
BoM errors typically fall within three categories:-
 Completeness
 Consistency
 Correctness.

Completeness:-
Incomplete data is the most common BoM defect. Critical pieces of
information, such as quantity, part description, reference designation and
approved manufacturers list, are often omitted. Missing AMLs reportedly
cause the majority of problems.

Consistency:-
Information in the BOM sometimes conflicts with information provided
in engineering drawings and design files. For example, quantities may not
match — there may be 10 locations for a particular component indicated on a
board, but only a quantity of nine components specified in the BOM. Another
consistency problem is format. The format of the BOM, even though it is from
the same customer, can change from one transmission to the next, making it
difficult to match and confirm data. Even language can vary from BOM to
BOM.

Correctness:-
Incorrect data is a serious problem. Common errors include invalid
manufacturer or supplier information, obsolete data and incorrect part
numbers (i.e., the MPN given does not match the description of the part, or
the MPN is not recognized by the manufacturer/supplier). Again, AMLs seem
to be the predominant problem. Additional errors can result from receipt of
information in hard copy format, which requires manual entry of date, an
error-prone and time consuming task.
ABOUT MY PROJECT

What I have done in this project?

As I have explained above that there are many parts which are being
used in the manufacturing of the bus. And when they book any bus, then
the material or parts which are used in the bus that are automatically
depleted from stock but it is not sure that the parts which are issued for
the manufacturing of the bus are used only that much quantity
sometimes its over issued or a vis-versa.

So I have to calculate that which material over and which is under

issued. So in this context my project guide Mr. ASHISH MUDGAL gives
the related data which I have required for this whole calculation.
DETAILS OF THE DATA WHICH IS USED IN MY PROJECT WORKINGS:-

1. BILL OF MATERIAL (BOM):-

The BOM is of separate month In this the whole detail of
the parts which are used in the manufacturing of the bus like

• PART NUMBER

• PART NAME

• HOW MUCH EACH PART IS USED IN EACH BUS

• RATE OF THE EACH USED PARTS

For example I have shown you a BOM of the month November

2. BUS PRODUCTION:-
How many bus will be book in each month from
November 2007 to MARCH 2008. So I have picked that how many buses booked in
my each working months.

For example:-shown the details of the bus production in month of the December.
.

3. ISSUE LIST:-
With the help of this list I will find out that which part is used in
which quantity and in which month.

For example:- shown the part number and how much is being issued in which
month.
And at last, After doing all calculation I have make a consolidated sheet in which it is
shown that which part is being under issued and which is over issued and of how
much of cost.
