PRIORITIES AND GOAL -SETTING: FALL 2018

Instructions: Using your completed “Semester-at-a-Glance” calendar as a reference, answer the

question sheet “Priorities and Goal-Setting.”

1. Identify 3 priorities or short-term goals that you can reasonably implement or achieve in
the next few weeks that will allow you to meet your term deadlines and obligations.
(Please write in full, grammatically correct sentences and be specific—use the SMART
goal-setting framework discussed in class.)

i. Starting a study group this semester this semester for common classes this semester is
a goal of mine in order to destress, and network. Maintaining relationships during this
semester or even the entire program. Creating and maintaining relationships are useful
for encourages a positive and supportive learning experience for all participants.
Thanks to technology, this group can be created online via discussion boards, in group
chats on text or on apps, as well as formed meeting times (example: library, SSB).
This network can continue beyond our post-secondary experience and can form
fulfilling bonds creating possible future opportunities.

ii. Filling out a calendar with all the due dates of assignments, dates of quizzes & tests,
and important personal dates will help with getting organized allowing me to meet
deadlines and obligations. This will give me a monthly outline so I am able to manage
my time more effectively. It also gives me the opportunity to except outside help such
as scheduling a time with SALS. During the first two weeks of September, I should be
able to acquire all due dates, and test/quiz dates to implement on the calendar.

iii. Scheduling studying times and an appointment with SALS would aid to meeting
deadlines and obligations. Accepting outside help, making time for myself, as well as
working with other peers during the semester/school year would relieve the anxiety of
struggling with the information in class in order to participate in assignments and
quizzes successfully and develop an appropriate and efficient work ethic for future
endeavors.

2. List 3 rewards that you will give yourself after successful completion of those goals.
(Please write in full, grammatically correct sentences.)

i. After the semester, I plan to indulge in retail therapy. Self-explanatory, but I enjoy
shopping and most of the sales occur around the end of the semester.
ii. Take a relaxing bath with bath bombs and soothing aids will be deserved after the
semester because self-care and time to your self is extremely important and I never make
time for myself to relax and enjoy my own company, so I think this experience will be
well deserved.

iii. Taking a day off for myself to enjoy my own time, company, and space to participate in
opportunities such as cleaning my room, looking for job opportunities, playing video
games, watching movies, sleeping, etc.

3. Looking at the semester as a whole (or the “big picture”), identify 1-2 potential
roadblocks or obstacles that may affect your ability to make certain deadlines and meet
obligations. (Please write in full, grammatically correct sentences.)

Two major road blocks that may affect my ability to meet deadlines and obligations include
balancing my social, self, potentially work and study time and learning to say “no”. Creating a
balance of all aspects of my life benefits my mental health and helps develop time
management skills. My mental health would benefit from equilibrium of my time because I
will be able to create time for myself, with others, some time for my work. As humans, we
need time to retain all information and “rest our brain”. Practicing time management skills is
beneficial for even my post-graduation experience allowing me to be resourceful with my
own and other people’s time, and deadlines are able to me met for my prior time is planned.
Prior to meeting deadlines, I am able to management personal and working times.

i. How might you proactively avoid those potential roadblocks or obstacles so that
you make your deadlines and meet your obligations? (Please write in full,
grammatically correct sentences.)

I have come up with three potential methods and resources to avoid these roadblocks.
Investing in an agenda/calendar, an empty notebook, and a wipe board (calendar & blank)
could allow me to become more organized and can aid to managing my time in a visual way.
A tangible agenda/calendar would be handy for I travel to school and I am able to access my
due dates, make extra notes and add other important dates to keep track of my dates inside
and outside of school. Secondly, an empty notebook is useful for me to write down my
thoughts about school, myself, life, encouraging words, etc. Lastly, a wipe board with colour
coded markers will give me a clear visual of each month that I am able to access at home for
when I do/plan school work at home prior to classes.

4. Identify at least 2 Durham College resources that may prove useful in ensuring that you
make your deadlines and meet your obligations. Explain why those resources are
appropriate in supporting your deadlines, responsibilities, and goals. (Please write in full,
grammatically correct sentences.)

Two Durham resources I will utilize this school year that will help me meet deadlines and
obligations include spending time and using resources at the library time and participating in
peer coaching. Spending time at the library will give me time to spend with a study group,
access to different resources inside and outside the classes I am studying, and give me space
away from home where majority of distractions are. Peer coaching is available at school
where I can access on my break where they can create short term goals (presented in question
1), and create weekly/monthly plans to organize your time in order to meet these deadlines.
Requesting a peer coach is allowing me to accept outside help to improve my personal long
term goals of becoming more organized, and managing time effectively.

5. Thinking about your objectives at Durham College beyond this semester, identify a
specific, measurable, and attainable long-term goal. (Note that your goal should be
specific—i.e. who, what, where, when, why, etc.—measurable—i.e. quantifiable—and
attainable—i.e. be honest and realistic. Please write in full, grammatically correct
sentences.)

I plan to graduate the Pre-Health Science program with honours in 2019, and be accepted into
Ryerson BCD program and eventually complete my Masters in Speech Pathology at UoT. In
order to obtain this goal I will use resources available in the school (SALS, Peer Coaching, etc.),
organize my time, make balance of all aspects of my life (social time, exercise, work, study time,
etc.). In order to achieve this goal, as stated previously; creating/maintaining a balance,
remaining organized, managing time effectively, and accepting outside help, can help me
achieve my goal. Also, communicating with important people in my life, during my time in
school, to schedule times to make time for each other respecting my alone/work time.

6. What will happen if you fall short of that longer term goal? Identify an alternative path
to academic success (i.e. a Plan B). (Please be specific, explain yourself thoroughly, and
write in full, grammatically correct sentences. Aim for one full paragraph.) Answer
within box.

IF I AM TO TAKE AN ALTERNATIVE PATH FROM MY LONG TERM GOAL THERE ARE ALTERNATE
ROUTE FOR ME TO ACCEPT, STRIVE, AND ALLOW MYSELF TO TAKE . ONE PATH INCLUDES
CONSIDERING A BRIDGING PROGRAM FROM S ENECA COLLEGE OR COMPLETING THE BCD
PROGRAM AT YORK U NIVERSITY . BRIDGING FROM S ENECA, WHICH WILL ACCEPT ME A LOT
EASILY SINCE I USED TO ATTEND THE COLLEGE , WILL ALLOW ME TO ACCEPT HAVING TO
EVENTUALLY BRIDGE TO RYERSON UNIVERSITY WHICH WOULD EXTEND MY EDUCATION
PROCESS . COMPLETING THE PROGRAM AT YORK WOULD CONFLICT TRANSPORTATION NEEDS
WHICH COULD BE PREDETERMINED (CARPOOLING ). ANOTHER PATH WOULD INCLUDE PASS ALL
CLASSES WITH A MINIMUM OF A 3.0 GPA IF NOT ABLE TO OBTAIN HONOURS . MAINTAINING MY
CURRENT SHORT TERM GOALS CAN HELP ME ACHIEVE A PASSING GRADE (SALS, PEER
COACHING , FORMING STUDY GROUPS, ETC .).
