What happens to an equation when we make a friendly number?
How do we use the strategy of “counting on”?
Can we use this strategy in our lives everyday?

Lesson Procedures

Introduction (15 min.):

Description of Hook/Attention Grabber; Expectations for Learning and Behavior; Transition to Body,

Let students have their silent reading time for 10 minutes in order to get settled and ready to work.

Ask students to put their books away.

Ask two students to hand out loose leaf pieces of paper in order to get the class started and to let them know that it is time to do
math.

Put the slide show up on the smart board. Explain to students that we can use mental math to subtract. Just like addition, we can
make a friendly number in order to help us come up with the answer.
Body (35 min.):

Descriptive and clearly organized steps/scaffolding and transitions in lesson. Indicate timing of each section. Identify teaching
strategies, organization of class etc. How and when are you using formative assessment in your lesson?

Go through the slide show. Show the slides about friendly numbers. Show them examples. Go through questions on the board with
the students. Ask them questions pertaining to the questions on the board. Ask them to help you complete the questions with you
on the board, calling on students individually.
- Have students practice once you have explained one strategy, then go on to the next.
- Review questions that you just practiced with them.

Tell students we can also use the strategy of “counting on”. Show them examples on the whiteboard, then have students practice their
own. Review questions they just practiced.

Ask 2 students to hand out the workbooks.

Go through the questions in the workbook, then allow them to start.
Have students work in their work book on p. 28-29
(Unit 2 Lesson 9) “Try these and number 1”

If you are finished early, come and show me your work, I will tell you if you need to fix or work on anything. If I then say that you are
done, you can take the math flashcards down into the boot room. If I can hear you from the classroom, you will lose the privilege and
come back to the classroom and silent read.

Closure ( 5 min.): Consolidation Learning; Indicate clean up protocol, material management etc.
Transition to Next Lesson. How do you plan to prepare students for the next period?
Are they changing classes? Is another teacher coming in to the room.
Have students clean up their workspace and put away their workbooks and duo tangs/pieces of paper.

Ask them to quietly push in their chairs and stand by their desks. Dismiss Lunch Leaders.
