Proc. 1763 Colonists could not move west of Appalachian mountains, reserved for
native Americans
Quartering Act Required colonists to house British soldiers and provide them with food,
candles, beer, and transportation
Stamp Act Colonists paid a tax on newspapers, pamphlets, dice, playing cards,
marriage licenses, etc…by purchasing goods with a stamp on it to indicate
the tax was paid. Colonists boycotted; Sons of Liberty formed to
“convince” people to not pay tax/boycott.
Townshend Acts Indirect tax on lead, paper, tea, and glass. Tax already included in price of
item so Britain hoped colonists would not notice and rebel. Colonists
boycotted.
Boston Massacre Five colonists died when British opened fire in Boston on a group of
colonists that were harassing soldiers. Sons of liberty made a big deal out
of it; used it as propaganda to get support for the rebellion of colonists
against British rule
Boston Tea Party Organized by the Sons of Liberty. Group of colonists dressed as natives
and dumped tea off a boat owned by the East India Tea company into
Boston Harbor. Done to protest tea tax.
Intolerable British closed Boston harbor until colonists paid for tea from Boston Tea
(Coercive) Acts Party. Military rule established in Boston, Britain closed Massachusetts
Legislature; Minutemen (colonists ready on a minute’s notice) began to
gather weapons and ammunition.
First Continental 12 of 13 colonies sent representatives to discuss actions of the British.
Congress Wrote the Declaration of Rights and decided to boycott British goods. So
important because began unity among the colonies…made them feel like
they were all fighting against British together.
Lexington & Concord “Shots Heard ‘Round the World.” British wanted to capture colonists’
stockpile of weapons/ammunition. Fighting broke out in Lexingto0n b/t
minutemen and British soldiers. British won battle at Lexington and
moved toward Concord. Paul Revere and two others told colonists in
Concord that “the British are coming!” and minutemen got ready for their
arrival behind fences, houses, barns. Surprise attack on soldiers resulted
in colonists winning battle of Concord. First shots of American Revolution.
