Although, despite, in spite of, even though, however


You can use all these linking words to join two contrasting ideas or to show that something is
surprising or not expected.

Although / Even though


Although/even though Emma is very young, she is the best person for the job.
Emma is the best person for the job, even though/although she is very young.
After although or even though you use a subject and a verb.

Despite / In spite of
Despite/In spite of her age, Emma is the best person for the job.
Emma is the best person for the job despite/in spite of her age.
After despite or in spite of, you use a noun or a gerund (-ing form).
Although, even though, despite, and in spite of join two contrasting ideas in one sentence. You can order
the sentence in two different ways.

However
Emma is very young. However, she is the best person for the job.
Emma is very young. She is, however, the best person for the job.
You use however at or near the start of a second sentence to show a contrast with the sentence before.
