Annotated Bibliography

Bryk, Anthony, Valerie Lee, and Peter Holland. “Catholic Schools and the Common Good.”

Harvard University Press, 1993, pp. 1-320.

This source is a study that was performed over a 10-year period. It examined the

statistics of catholic schools specifically. It explains the positives and the must-haves

from a catholic education and why they are beneficial. This source is useful because of

the argumentative nature provides information about catholic education and the benefits.

This would be helpful in a they say, I say argument. This source is scholarly and

relevant. It is a published book from a university and also has a bibliography.

Chaves, Mark. “American Religion.” Contemporary Trends, vol. 2, Princeton University Press,

2017, pp. 1-115.

This source is a great resource for all things religion in America. It covers the highs and

lows of religion in America in the past and the present. This source will provide a

baseline of knowledge on my topic. Also, this source will be able to compare information
with any of the other sources. This source is very reliable. It is a published book, that

was published by a university and is also in the library of congress.

Danny Cohen-Zada and Todd Elder. “Religious Pluralism and the Transmission of Religious

Values through Education.” 2017, pp. 1-62.

This source evaluates some of the effects of going to a private religion affiliated school

and a secular public school. It looks at real data about kids who attend these schools in

America. The source also operates on the notion that parents decide to send their

children to a private religious school, so their child is not exposed to anything to conflict

with religion at a public school. This article is useful because it will provide information

and facts on the effect of these different schooling options. It is also a source for

statistics about the topic. This source is scholarly and reliable because both of the authors

work at a university, and it has an abstract.

Hansen, Brian. "Religion in the Workplace." CQ Researcher, 23 Aug. 2002, pp. 649-72,

library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre2002082300.

This article explains the conversation going on about religion in the workplace. It

provides background information for many events that have led us to this point, as well as

explores questions related to the topic of religion in the workplace. This information is

useful because it will serve as another puzzle piece to explain religion’s role in today’s

world. I will use this source to understand the difference between religion in the

workplace and religion in schools. This source seems reliable and relevant. It is on the

CQ researcher website and also has a bibliography. This is a good source.

Karaim, Reed. "Religious Freedom." CQ Researcher, 1 Jan. 2016, pp. 1-24,

library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre2016010100.
This source explores religious freedom and what role it plays in everyday life. It

highlights several real-life examples in the past that created issues with religious

freedom. The article then explains the decisions and why they were made. This source is

useful because it will provide information about religion and the role it plays in all of

society, not just in education. This way they may be compared. The article seems reliable

and relevant, it is on the CQ Researcher database and contains a bibliography.

Llorent-Vaquero, Mercedes. “Religious Education in Public Schools in Western Europe.”

International Education Studies, vol. 11, no. 1, Jan. 2018, pp. 155–164.

This source evaluates the discussion between the separation of church and state and

weather it is a necessary discussion to have by evaluating the religion in schools. This

source is very important because it will provide information and real examples of there

being no real line between religion and education working in Europe. This is a scholarly

article because it is a government website, it has an abstract, and a lengthy bibliography.

This source is very credible and will provide good insight into the discussion of church

and state and weather it even needs to be a discussion at all.

Marshall, Patrick. "Religion in Schools." CQ Researcher, 12 Jan. 2001, pp. 1-24,

library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre2001011200.

This source is an article that explores both sides of the argument of how much of an

impact should religion have in public schools. It explores different aspects of the issue

such as the prayer barriers in schools being too rigid and weather students should be

allowed to participate if the prayer is student led. It weighs the pros and cons of prayer

being allowed in schools as well. This source is useful because of the unbiased outlook

on prayer. It will serve as quality baseline knowledge of both arguments while some
articles will be argumentative. The article is on the CQ researcher database contains a

bibliography. It seems credible and reliable.

“Religious Expression in Public Schools.” A Statement of Principles, Department of Education,

Jun. 1998, pp. 1-12.

This source is basically the laws around religion in schools. It goes over the exact

parameters of each law. It also provides information about what the law previously was

and also about the events that changed them. This source is useful because it establishes

the rules and explains the reason why they were made. I can compare any argument

made in another article to the rules and examine what should be done. This article is

scholarly because it comes from a government agency and it has an abstract.
