Volleyball Rules and Scoring

1. A game is completed when one team scores 25 points and has a 2-point
advantage over the opponent.
2. Any team may score in volleyball.
3. A serve should be hit with an open hand with rigid fingers and a firm wrist.
The ball may be held or tossed in the air but must be clearly hit, not thrown.
4. The server stands behind the end line and within the serving area. They may
step on or over the line AFTER the ball is hit.
5. A service fault occurs when a player fails to be within her own serving area,
when the ball goes into or below the net, when the ball fails to go over then
net, when the ball lands outside the court boundaries, or when the ball hits
an object over the court
6. A player must be in the proper position in relation to her teammates on the
serve. Once the ball is served she may assume any position on the court,
however, a back row player may not come to the net to spike or participate in
a block.
7. A ball may be played as soon as any part of it crosses the net.
8. Side out refers to the loss of the serve by a team.
9. The ball may be contacted only 3 times a side. A player may not have two
successive hits. If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously it is
considered only one play, any player involved may participate in the next play.
If a player or players block at the net, any player may make the next
contact. (This contact would be considered the first team contact.)
10. The ball must be clearly hit with one or both hands, forearms, or any part
of the body above the waist. Contact with two hands or forearms must be
simultaneous.
11. A ball in play may be recovered from the net if the player makes no
contact with the net.
12. A player may leave the court to play a ball.
13. Any ball that strikes the net and crosses over, is still in play.
