Principal
Esek Hopkins Middle School
480 Charles St, Providence RI 02904

Dear Mrs. Gloria Jackson,

I would like to start by expressing my strongest interest in your available position for a Special

Education teacher. I came across the opportunity to become a part of your special education

team on your school website. I am currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary

Studies, with a concentration in Special Education EC-12. I believe my field experience paired

with my passion for working with students with special needs, would make me a great asset at

Esek Hopkins Middle School.

I have had the pleasure of working with students with special needs for over two years, most of

my time has been spent in inclusion and self-contained classrooms. I have worked closely with

students who have ADHD/ADD, autism, emotionally disturbed, and learning disabilities such as

dyslexia and dysgraphia. Working with these students has helped me practice differentiated

instruction, as well as targeted instruction. I have been able to practice this by accommodating

students’ unique needs into learning, while creating an environment in which they feel safe and

supported. Throughout my schooling and field experience, I have learned many valuable

lessons, including how to approach students in a manner in which they are not made to feel

less than, instead they are treated equally. I believe each student is unique, thus we should

highlight their strengths with positive reinforcement tactics while strengthening their areas of

weakness.
The time I have shared with students who have special needs has broadened my passion for

teaching them. I enjoy being challenged, and it brings me joy to see their faces light up when I

have helped them understand a new concept. I understand that working with students with

special needs takes a unique individual; someone who can practice patience, acceptance,

creativity and organization. I feel I possess such qualities; enabling me to facilitate a positive

learning environment tailored to the needs of each student. I believe I can create a diverse

setting; in which we understand and fully embrace one another’s cultural/linguistic and or

learning differences. In addition, I understand that parents are essential to student success.

Therefore, I would bridge the gap between home and school by maintaining positive

communication with parents. Thus, I would always consider parent concerns, observations and

feedback into my decision making.

I believe that my experience, education and personal characteristics will enable me to facilitate

positive academic trajectories for all students. I welcome the opportunity to meet with you to

further discuss how I can be a part of your special education team, at Esek Hopkins Middle

School.

I appreciate your consideration,

Anndree Curtis
