Course Art
Title/Focus November 14 – 1 ½ hour

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

 Art – Expression Component 10 (i), Purpose 4 - Students will express a feeling or a message.
o Concept B - Specific messages, beliefs and interests can be interpreted visually, or
symbolized.
 Art Component 10 (iii) MEDIA AND TECHNIQUES - Students will use media and techniques,
with an emphasis on mixing media and perfecting techniques in drawing.
o Concept A, Drawing - Use drawing tools to make a variety of lines extending beyond
Level One into character and direction—passive, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, parallel

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Compose a drawing of a hot air balloon using a variety of line directions. (create)
2. Illustrate some of their interests. (understanding)

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

 Sheets of paper with printed circle
 Pencils/erasers
 Pencil crayons or markers
 Black markers
 Scissors
 White board marker

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

 bring example of completed work to show and hang on the board
 bring print out of steps to drawing balloon
 figure out what coloring supplies they have available to them before they start and if you need to
hand them out or not.

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Have class take out a pencil and eraser while student helper hands out the sheet of
paper to students.
 Inspired by Vinny’s question last class – “what makes you feel incredible?” “What
makes you feel like your floating on air?”
 For our first art lesson together, we are going to draw a hot air balloon, and then
decorate it with a few things that make us happy. Then I can get to know you a
little better.
5 min
 Show your example and give a bit of explanation to the pictures you decorated
them with.
 Explain that all steps of drawing the balloon will be completed together. I will
show you the step on the board, then you do the same on your own example in
pencil. When you finish a step, put your pencil down and your finger on your nose
so I know you are ready to move on.

Body Time
2
Drawing the 1) Draw a faint, dotted line of symmetry down vertically
balloon as a class down the center of the circle, starting at the top all the
way down to the bottom of your page.
o Discuss the meaning of symmetry and vertical
2) Be careful not to draw too har with the pencil in case you
want to erase something. Add the bottom of the balloon
by drawing a skinny oval at the bottom of the circle.
Then, connect that oval to the circle by drawing two
curved lines to it, kind of like a spout.
3) About one fist length down from the oval, were going to
draw another oval, slightly bigger in size, which will be
the bottom of the basket.
4) Then, from the tips of the new oval, we are going to draw
two even straight lines, like you were drawing a cup.
After, we connect those two lines with a horizontally
curved line to make the top of our basket.
5) Next, we are going to draw a straight vertical line from
the top of our balloon to the top of our basket.
6) Now we attach our basket to the balloon. About one
third of the way up the balloon, draw a straight vertical
line to the one corner of the basket, and then repeat on
the other side.
40 min
7) Draw two lines connecting the bottom of the balloon
spout to the basket
8) After that, we make our balloon appear as though it is
full of air and popping out at you. We will do that by
adding curved lines to our circle. Using our line of
symmetry down the middle, we are going to draw
curved lines going away from the middle of the circle.
Imagine the center line is like a guitar string. On the
right side, were going to stretch this line to the right.
Repeat on the left side
9) Beside the first stretched line we draw, were going to
draw a line parallel to it. Repeat on the left side.
o Define parallel (not touching, using the same
shape)
10) Remember how I said earlier to look at our balloon split
into thirds? Now were going to draw two horizonal
curved lines to split the balloon into those three
sections. This time they curve slightly upward. Again, to
make the balloon seem full of air.
11)The last step is to add wickers to the basket. These are
horizontal and vertical lines to look like a checker board.

Independent 1) Once the steps of drawing as a class have been 65 min

completion completed, give instructions on how to finish the
assignment on their own. (write them on the board too)
o Trace the good copy of the lines they just drew
3
with a marker and erase the pencil underneath.
(point out the bottom line of the circle to ignore
though)
o Decorate balloon with a few things that make you
happy
o Color
o Cut out when completed

Conclusion Time
 Before you pack up, popsicle stick a student to have him share his drawing to
the class. Have them pick a friend to share next and repeat a couple times.
 Have students’ write their name on the back, hand in their projects and clean 15 min
up their area.

Assessment
 Formative - observation and discussion when completing steps as a class
 Formative – submission of final project not for marks but to observe where they succeeded
and struggled.
