ABSTRACT

In hospitals, Saline is fed to patients to treat dehydration and thus

improve their health. In current health care measures, whenever a saline
is fed to any patient, the patient needs to be continuously monitored by a
nurse or any caretaker. Almost in all of the hospital, a nurse or caretaker
is responsible for monitoring the saline level continuously without any
interruptions. Due to the negligence and inattentiveness towards saline

3
completion by doctors, nurses or caretaker of the patients and lack of
nurses with sufficient skills in hospitals and their excessive workload, a
huge number of patients are being harmed in the hospitals. Hence to
prevent the patient from getting harmed and protect their lives during
saline feeding period, the saline level monitoring and control system have
been developed. The proposed system comprises of sensors which will act
as a level sensor for monitoring the critical level of the saline in the
saline bottle and control infusion drop rate from using motor mechanism
to increasing and decreasing the saline drop rate. The system will
show saline droplet status, saline drop rate and remaining
time through app to be develop for convenient to hospital
staff member. This proposed system can be utilized efficiently in
homes as well as hospitals.

1 Introduction

These days technology is growing at a very high speed. Human lives

have become much more dependent on electronic devices. Today’s world
requires sophisticated control in its different electronic gadgets. The basic
aim of saline level indicator is to ease human lives. Automation of the
surrounding environment of a modern human being helps to increase the

4
work efficiency and saves time. Saline is fed when the patient’s body is
dehydrated. A constant monitoring of the saline level in the bottle is
required. If the empty saline bottle is not replaced immediately then the
pressure difference between the patient’s blood pressure and the empty
saline bottle causes reverse flow of blood into the saline. Theses situation
can be serious threat to the patient’s well-being. Thus the automation
device is suggested in order to avoid any inconvenience that may be
caused to the patient’s in case of lacking of constant monitoring by
patient’s relatives or hospital employees.
The nurses can check saline droplet status of each patient’s bed without
walking around patient’s room every hour. The device will send the status
to the host unit and show the results. Therefore, nurses can check saline
droplet status.

2 LITERATURE SURVEY

The paper [1] proposes infusion monitoring device using an IR sensor

which can detect or sense the drip infusion rate(drops per minute),
remaining time, an empty infusion solution bag at particular critical set
level and also show remaining infusion capacity displayed on central
monitor and this information will be sent wirelessly to the central monitor

5
placed at the nurse’s control room and also from central monitor, nurses
can control the drip infusion rate . along with their notification on the
monitor which consists of Graphical User Interface (GUI) at the
supervising end.

The paper [2] proposes the idea of using Zigbee technology to display
droplet rate, remaining time and different saline droplet status with
different colours of LED’s and along with their notification on the
monitor which consists of Graphical User Interface (GUI) at the
supervising end.

Another field of application of real-time health monitoring system is

based on Bluetooth technology[3].The data of drip infusion rate and
empty bag condition are sent through Bluetooth device to the centrally
monitored at nurse station which is supervised by an attainder and
command it to concern authority in any critical situation. This is an
upgrade system of operation which gives lots of information and
continuous observe about patients condition

With the advancement of technology, progress takes place in every field

of life. Best use of technology is seen in the biomedical stream.
Monitoring of patients health is a concerning issue. RFID technology is
being used in which RFID tag is attached towards infusion pouch at the
bottom level of medication and when the fluid is above RFID tag then the
tag will be inactivated to respond to the distant RFID reader. Whereas,
when the liquid level inside the bottle/ bag is beneath the RFID tag, then
the RFID tag or label starts working habitually again and echoes or

6
repeats to the reader to signal or indicate an empty or vacant status. This
data is sent through Local Area Network (LAN) to host PC [4].

The research papers used as reference for developing saline level

monitoring system are Priyadharshini.R, Mithuna.S, Vasanth Kumar.U,
Kalpana Devi.S, Dr. Suthanthira Vanitha.N [5] This paper highlights RF
based automatic alerting and indicating device where IR sensor is used as
a level sensor.IR sensor output voltage level changes when intravenous
fluid level is below certain limit. The comparator continuously compares
the IR output with predefined threshold. When the transceiver output is
negative then the Arduino controller identifies that the fluid level is too
low and it alerts the observer by buzzer and LCD at the control room
indicating the room number of the patient for quick recovery.

With the use of Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) based
technology. The paper [6] describes the idea in which setting of different
ranges of drop rate; for example, 6-7 drop rate indicates the high speed of
roller clamp and this data sends to nurse/doctor’s mobile which shows
flow rate of the fluid.

Manoj Kumar Swain, Santosh Kumar Mallick, Rati Ranjan Sabat [7] This
paper highlights a spring system for monitoring the saline. The spring is
made to act as a weight sensor. When the saline drops down to a certain
low level then an alarm generated to alert the nurse that the saline fed to
the patient is over. The difference of weight is used to sense the amount
of saline present in the bottle and hence is used to provide an audible
alarm present in the indicator board at attender or nurse room. If the nurse

7
fails to attend the patient immediately then a motor arrangement is done
which suppresses and flattens the saline tube. This prevents the upward
flow of saline from the veins to the bottle.

The paper [8] proposes an automatic saline flow monitor, which measures
the saline drop rate and sends the information of flow rate to the remote
cell phone. It is an advanced and automatic saline monitoring system
helpful for the doctors to monitor the flow from a distance.

This paper[9] proposes an automatic, low cost saline level measurement

system using microcontroller ATMEGA 328 which sensed the patient’s
ECG through 3 lead electrode system via AD8232 which amplifies minor
and small bio-signals to the Arduino which processes them, along with
saline level. Saline level is detected through IR sensors. The output of the
electrical pulse is shown with the serial monitor. The saline level is
indicated by LCD. The major output ECG analog signal is displayed on
serial plotter.

This paper[10] proposes An automatic saline level monitoring system

consists of IR sensors which are used to determine the status of liquid in
the bottle whether it is normal or warning status. Bluetooth module and
CC2500 wireless module act as transreciever, due to which the
notification can be sent to the nurse on her mobile as well as computer.
The speaker starts ringing when the liquid goes below the critical level
and automatically nurse will get the notification of warning.

3. Problem Statement

Almost in all of the hospital, a nurse or caretaker is responsible for monitoring the
saline level continuously without any interruptions. Due to the negligence and
inattentiveness towards saline completion by doctors, nurses or caretaker of the
patients and lack of nurses with sufficient skills in hospitals and their excessive
workload, a huge number of patients are dying and are being harmed in the hospitals.

9
Hence to prevent the patient from getting harmed and protect their lives during saline
feeding period, we are going to develop the smart saline level monitoring and control
system.

4. Objectives

1 To detect the critical level of saline bottle using IR sensor.

2 To make the system that automatically stop the flow after emptying of saline
bottle using motor mechanism to increasing and decreasing drop rate which is
controlling through app.
3 To design android application to display the result in the form of saline
droplet rate, remaining time to empty the saline bottle displayed on mobile
phone.
4 Provide cost effective and automatic saline level monitoring and controlling
system which can be effortlessly implemented in any hospitals.

Conclusion:
As the entire proposed system is automated, it requires very less human intervention.
It will be advantageous at night. It can wirelessly send the information and display the
results in the form of saline droplet rate, remaining time to empty the saline bottle.
This will reduce the stress in continual monitoring by the doctor or nurse.
