OUR PROGRAMS
In the first year of our 2020 strategic
plan, our advocacy helped advance
several significant bicycle policy and
infrastructure projects across the
region. Our youth cycling program
grew in breadth and depth, and we
spread the joy of bicycling through a
variety of classes and rides.
4200 Women Bike PHL Facebook
members supported one another online
and face-to-face. The group continues to grow
in numbers and inclusivity, inspiring women,
transgender, and non-binary folks in Greater
Philadelphia to ride a bike. We partnered
with Janney Montgomery Scott, a financial
investment firm, to provide this community
financial literacy and investment sessions.
Janney and BCGP proudly partnered to deliver
an inspirational panel of Women Bike PHL
cyclists at the 2017 Philadelphia Bike Expo
session. The panel, titled “A Cyclist’s Journey”
depicted how cycling at any life stage can
have a great impact on personal goals and
development, and even impact one’s career
path and professional success.

1500 people received bicycle safety education and joined our rides.
Our Circuit rides explored Pennypack Trail, Cobbs Creek Parkway to the Heinz
Wildlife Refuge, Chester Valley and Chester Creek Trails, and more. Discovery rides
had their sights on local destinations like the Japanese Gardens, Mann Center for
Performing Arts, and the Barnes Foundation. Our *Better Bike Share Partnership
team reached 500 people, 62% of whom were new bicycle riders, with bicycle safety
education and community rides, supporting the initiative’s goal build equitable and
replicable bike share systems. Through a new initiative, we trained five community
members to teach Spanish language bicycle safety classes and lead rides.

equitable and replicable bike share systems. The partners include The City of Philadelphia, Bicycle
Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO)

get good grades, which is 18% growth over the course of
their 3-month season. This growth fell directly in line with
the launch of Homework Help, which offers youth additional
academic support.

The new ramp will replace thirty-nine steps, up which cyclists must now carry

A $9 Million project to build the Benjamin Franklin
Bridge ADA-accessible bicycle and pedestrian ramp
received final approval for construction by the Delaware River
Port Authority Board of Commissions, capping a 13 year advocacy
campaign. When the ramp is finished in 2019, it will become
the highest quality connection between the two states’ Circuit
networks, which are separated by the Delaware River.

BETTER BIKE SHARE
PA R T N E R S H I P
Through the Better Bike Share Partnership, we work
to help adults feel comfortable riding a bicycle. These
free Adult Learn to Ride classes, Urban Riding Basics
classes, and group rides for beginners are offered in
English and Spanish in order to make them accessible
to more Philadelphians.
BICYCLE COALITION
YOUTH CYCLING
Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling fosters healthy habits,
independence and leadership in Philadelphia youth,
one ride at a time. Our athletes compete across a
variety of cycling disciplines (road, triathlon, cross,
touring, mountain bike) and engage in mentorship
and leadership activities like weekly Homework Help
sessions, presenting at the National Bike Summit, and
lobbying Congress for better infrastructure.

Members and staff of the Bicycle Coalition of
Greater Philadelphia promote and encourage all
cyclists to follow the rules of the road, for the sake of
everyone— especially Philadelphia’s most vulnerable
road users: pedestrians.
WOMEN BIKE PHL
A network of women/trans/nonbinary Philadelphians,
Women Bike PHL works toward gender equity
in cycling. This community provides education,
encouragement and support to active and aspiring
cyclists through group rides, beginner race teams,
workshops, and social events.

Together with the William Penn Foundation and
partner organizations, we have secured tens of millions
of dollars to build off-road, multipurpose trails in our
region. Connecting the over 800 miles of the Circuit
will strengthen our region by providing a place for
healthy transportation and recreation, connecting
our communities to green space, and making our
neighborhoods more attractive places to live and work.
BIKING THE SUBURBS
We work with volunteer affiliate groups to advocate for
the implementation of low-stress street networks and
strategically-located bicycle facilities in the eight counties
surrounding Philadelphia, and to overcome obstacles
such as funding, legal hurdles and outdated standards.

BIKEWAY NETWORK
This campaign aims to increase public understanding
and support for a connected high quality bicycle
infrastructure in Philadelphia to attract new bicyclists
and to contribute toward traffic-calming in areas plagued
by crashes that cause fatalities and severe injuries.
VISION ZERO
Thanks in part to our advocacy, the City of Philadelphia
released a comprehensive Vision Zero Action Plan in 2017.
The plan recommends actions to reduce traffic deaths
to zero by 2030. Since then, the Bicycle Coalition has
continued to host our annual Vision Zero Conference to
share best practices around safe streets and to advocate
for equity in traffic enforcement.
