First Semester 2018-2019
Mid-Semester Test (EC-2 Regular)

Course No. : BA ZG524

Course Title : ADVANCED STATISTICAL METHODS
Nature of Exam : Closed Book
Weightage : 30% No. of Pages =2
Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 6
Date of Exam : 30/09/2018 (FN)
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1. A teacher wishes to study the amount of time spent by students in his statistics course for each
week in study for the course. Teacher believes that the average should be the nominal 6 hours
(two hours outside class for every hour in class). So he has the students keep track of, and
report the time spent in study during a week. A total of 7 students respond. The average time
spent is 6.5 hours with a standard deviation of 2 hours. With this information he wishes to
perform a hypothesis test.
Identify the values for each of the following relevant variables. (If a value is not given, then
state "not given".) [1 + 1 + 1+ 1 + 1 = 5]
(a) μ (b) σ (c) n (d) X (e) s

Q.2 (a) It is believed that the precision (as measured by the variance) of an instrument is no more
than 0.16. Write down the null and alternative hypothesis for testing this belief. Carry out
the test at 1% level given 11 measurements of the same subject on the instrument (
Tabulated value at 1% level of significance is 24.725 for 11 d.f , 23.2 for 10 d.f and 21.66
for 9 d.f.)
2.5 2.3 2.4 2.3 2.5 2.7 2.5 2.6 2.6 2.7 2.5.
Q.2 (b) Set up the Hypothesis and state your conclusions [3 + 2 = 5]

Q.3 (a) Two researchers adopted different sampling techniques while investigating the same group
of students to find the number of students falling in different intelligence levels. The
results are as follows:

Researcher No of Students at each level

Below Average Average Above Genius Total
Average
X 86 60 44 10 200
Y 40 33 25 2 100
Total 126 93 69 12 300
Would you say that the sampling technique adopted by the two researchers are
significantly different?
(Given 5% value for 2 d.f and 3 d.f are 5.991 and 7.82 respectively).
Q.3 (b) Set up the Hypothesis and state your conclusions. [3 + 2 = 5]
Q.4. In the table given below are the yields of 6 varieties in a 4 replicate experiment for which
analyse an appropriate analysis. [1 + 1 + 3 = 5]

Blocks 1 2 3 4 5 6
1 18.5 15.7 16.2 14.1 13 13.6

4 16.5 18.6 12.7 15.7 16.5 18
( a) Set up the Hypothesis (b) Analyze the data and (c) state your conclusions.(The tabulated
value at 5% is (5,14) , (3,14) (6,3) ,(3,6),(2,6),(6,2) are 2.96,3.34 ,8.94,4.76,5.14 and 19.33)

Q.5. Identify and interpret the following output and conclusions to be made for each table:
(a) What is the Coefficient of Determination?
(b) Is the relationship significant at alpha = 5%? Explain your conclusion?
(c) At alpha = 5%, would you reject the null hypothesis that β1 = 0.462? Explain your
conclusion. [1 + 2 + 2 = 5]
