Catching a tigress

July 25, 2010 11:06 pm

Several mont hs ago, I was enjoying second cup of my evening t ea in my lounge af t er a long day at
work when my eyes got st uck on t he T V screen which was running on it s own and no one was
wat ching; it was BBC1 or BBC3 and t hey were showing an int erview of a girl wit h a guit ar on her
back. T here was somet hing in her eyes t hat was appealing enough f or me t o t urn up t he volume
(also, a girl wit h a guit ar or riding a mot orbike on her own is all it t akes t o get me hooked!). Her
voice seemed f amiliar and in t he back of my mind, it was giving me an impression t hat I know her
somehow; it is wort h ment ioning I never saw her bef ore in my lif e. Af t er a while and t o my surprise, I
f ound out t hat she’s t he singer I have been searching f or so damn long.

Last year, I list ened t o one of her songs on t he radio (yes, I list en t o t he radio! I also own a vint age
Van Der Molen record player and list en t o my vinyl LPs on weekend mornings; if you’re st ill
guessing t hen yes, I am weird!). I’m pret t y sure I list ened t o her songs on soundt racks or
somewhere else as well. Since t hen I have been looking f or her, and t here she was in f lesh and
blood giving an int erview! Riding on excit ement and sheer joy, I quickly t urned of f my mobile,
unplugged my land line phone and locked t he doors so no one could possibly dist urb me while I
celebrat e and mark t his long pursued event .

As I sat t ot ally glued in f ront of t he T V and wat ched her t alking about her own lif e and about her
percept ion on lif e and music, everyt hing f elt so right , her t hought s seemed so elegant ; t he same
f eelings I got when I list ened t o her song. Lat er it was clear t o me why; she writ es her songs
herself ; no wonder t here was t he obvious connect ion! T here was also a t ouch of st ubbornness in
her dreamy blue eyes, more like a rebel spirit , which ref lect s in her music. She was a bit nervous in
t he int erview but as soon as she f aced t he microphone and st rung t he f irst chord on her guit ar
st rings, a st rong sense of conf idence st art ed t o f low and made it s way t hrough t he et her t o me.

Her name is Lissie Maurus (Elisabeth Maurus), born in 1982, she is f rom Rock Islands, Illinois, US
(Ash, t his adds one more ent ry under your ‘unrequit ed jealousy t ab’!), she is known by her st age
name Lissie. Her f at her is a physician and her mot her is an int erior designer. She is a singer and
song-writ er. She sings variet y of st yles – f olk, count ry, rock, blues. She played t he t it le role of t he
Broadway musical “Annie” at t he age of nine. [Source: Wikipedia]

I wat ched her int erview and one st age perf ormance, and I was simply overwhelmed. She
ment ioned t hat her debut album was going t o be released in June. I eagerly wait ed, and last
mont h I bought t he album “Cat ching a t iger”.

I list ened t o her album over and over again, and again and again. Every t ime it gave me somet hing
new and f resh. I f elt as if I was st randed on a desert ed island and she was guiding me t hrough her
songs; wit h every t urn t here was a nice surprise wait ing; she made t he same pat h f eel like
exploring anew.

She brought in f ew st yles in t he album, f rom proud and bold rock t o deep and dense blues
encased in f olk and count ry t heme wit h a hint of psychedelic t ouch in t he core. Like a t igress she
gracef ully, and beaut if ully, roamed bet ween dif f erent st yles, marking her t errit ory and ent rance in
t he music realm. A magnif icent blend of music st yles perf ect ly execut ed and deserves t he credit
f or being brave in so doing in her debut album.

Her vibrant presence in her songs in voice and lyrics really creat es a posit ive reciprocat ing
experience. You will f eel what she has t o say wit h her simple but sophist icat ed lyrics and mat ure
yet clear, calm and soot hing voice; and it f lows nat urally f rom her passion f or music, wit hout her
even t rying; she’s got t hat sort of t alent . Her music is what your inner self longs f or, it gives you a
hand t o hold and she never let s go, it put s a subt le smile on your f ace which glows f rom wit hin your
soul; it ’s such a beaut if ul experience t hat she will make you dream her own dreams.

Now t his is t he part where I explain t he reason behind writ ing t his post , and I am not ashamed f or
what I am going t o writ e next -

I urge you all, please list en t o her songs. T he album is due t o be released in t he US in August , but
you can f ind t hem on yout ube. T hey are not st udio versions but nevert heless it should send t he
message across. I will recommend f ew of her songs at t he end of t his post and if you like even one
of her songs t hen please buy her album t o support her, and t ell your f riends and colleagues t o
list en as well.

In t his dire t ime of t alent shows, t he t rue t alent s sadly f ade away unnot iced. Her songs don’t have
t he cat chy t unes like Rihanna’s, neit her she possesses t he f ashion sense of Lady Gaga; she
cannot shake her body like Shakira nor she can dance half -naked like Brit ney Spears, but she has
t his raw t alent and a t rue passion f or music which is wort h praising. It would be a grave mist ake t o
let her wit her away unappreciat ed and not giving her t he chance t o let t his world know what more
she has t o of f er.

Recommended songs (I really st ruggled t o choose!

you will also f ind some of t he video songs on www.lissie.com) -

Everywhere I go
When I’m alone
Loosen t he knot
Lit t le lovin’
Oh Mississippi
Bully
In sleep

(I hat e t o st op, but if I keep on going, I will ment ion all t he songs f rom her album!)
