Rhetorical Awareness

To what extent does this editorial attend to its purpose and its audience's needs? For example, is
the editorial written at an LA or NY Times reader’s level? Is its focus persuading readers to think,
believe, or do something about an ethical issue in the writer’s major or discipline?

This editorial does a good job of showing why police officers should carry and does good job of
persuading readers on the issue.

Ethical Research

To what extent does this editorial consistently and correctly use quotation marks and MLA- , APA-,
or Wikipedia-style in-text (number system) and end-of-text (reference list) citations for all sources,
whether quoted directly or paraphrased? Does the editorial cite at least six sources, at least four of
which are peer-reviewed? Are the editorial’s sources diverse (say, from journals, videos, and
newspapers)? Does it avoid relying too much on a single source?

This editorial does a great job of including properly cited sources. And does not simply throw in
citations. The author does a great job of showing how certain information will be cited. The author
does a good job of using multiple sources however their reference page needs to be cleaned up
format wise to give it a cleaner look.

Support/Evidence

How well does the editorial support any claims it makes with relevant, thorough, and specific
evidence? To what extent are you convinced by the author’s arguments? To what extent is the
editorial objective and unbiased?

This editorial’s claims are relevant because of the evidence used by the author. The author does a
great job of incorporating the studies’ information in their editorial to help convince the audience on
the author’s argument that police officers should carry off duty.

Organization

How organized is the editorial? For instance, does it use clear, specific organizational devices (like
an argumentative thesis, an introduction paragraph, topic sentences and unified paragraphs, logical
headings, and transitions) to present the paper’s argument clearly and logically?

At the beginning of the editorial it shows that it has some organizational devices although I would
expand more on the reason that they give on why police officers should carry. For example they
could list some of the incidents that they mention that officers could be more equipped to handle
than citizens. The could also expand on why police officers are hated an how they need to protect
themselves with their firearms. Another issue with the organization of this article is that It seems as if
there is no conclusion to round out this editorial. This editorial should have a conclusion that rounds
out why police officers should carry when off duty.

Language
Is the language effective, concise, and varied? Does the language respect the diversity of
the LA or NY Times’ readers (e.g., not using bigoted or biased language)?

This editorial is written with effective and concise language and is also respectful of the diversity of
typical LA and NY times readers.

Design

To what extent does the editorial’s design conform to the design used in the LA or NY Times?

This editorial does a great job of conforming to the design used in the LA or NY Times I also think
this editorial has good placement of images that help the editorial.
